General Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional II)

Position Summary The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) at San Diego State University is seeking a General Academic Advisor to serve undergraduate students. The advisor will support a caseload of students by providing academic advising, student support, and programming that enhances student achievement and timely graduation. Key Responsibilities Provide holistic academic guidance, student success and degree–planning support, policy interpretation, milestone outreach, retention and graduation intervention, inter‑department communication, petition coordination, advising material development, and data‑informed support for students and faculty. Promote CAL majors, minors, and engagement opportunities by conducting outreach to undeclared and admitted students, collaborating with Undeclared Advisers, and responding to student, parent, and visitor inquiries. Provide logistical and coordination support for special events such as venue setup, program planning, event materials creation, and department representation at Explore SDSU Open House and the CAL Student Success Workshops series. Position Information Full‑time (1.0 time‑base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. Exempt under FLSA; not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; may vary based on operational needs. Position based on campus at SDSU in San Diego; eligible for telework after an initial training period. Education and Experience Equivalent to graduation from a four‑year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a related field. Additional specialized experience may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis. Competence is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field; a master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. Key Qualifications Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education/student affairs, counseling or a related field. Experience advising diverse groups of students and student organizations across the academic spectrum. Knowledge of a variety of academic disciplines in terms of course requirements and career paths. Experience utilizing SDSU Navigate advising (EAB) and similar academic advising tools. Two years’ experience interpreting and explaining academic policies governing public or private university admissions. Two years’ experience working in a college or university admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar or other student service–related office. Compensation and Benefits Salary is based on experience, education, and qualifications within the department’s budget and equity guidelines. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,083 – $7,228/month; hiring salary not expected to exceed $5,083/month. Generous Time Off: 15 paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave. Retirement: CalPERS pension plan with retiree healthcare and reciprocal agreements with other California public retirement systems, including the UC.
