For more information about this position and our competitive pay, benefits package and pension plan, refer to this job posting or our City website at JOB SUMMARY: This is inspectional work in securing compliance with city ordinances at accepted standards governing the installation and operation of mechanical systems and equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for the inspection of a variety of mechanical installations primarily those involving air conditioning, heating and refrigeration systems, so as to assure the standards of quality, material, workmanship and safety as established by the Florida building code. Employees normally work independently on field inspections, making decisions requiring the use of technical judgment and discretion; however, they consult with their superior on the more difficult or unusual cases. The work is subject to periodic checks, inspections and investigations and complaints arising out of the work and is under the general supervision of the Chief Mechanical Inspector. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Makes inspections on new and existing air conditioning and refrigeration installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings for conformance with safety standards, laws, and ordinances; checks plans and workmanship to see that mechanical work complies with codes, ordinances and regulations. Checks existing power source to ensure its ability to carry additional load without danger. Reports and maintains records of work performed. Attends seminars and training courses to stay informed on new developments in the related field and to obtain current information of code changes. Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Required: High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus five (5) years’ experience as a Mechanical Contractor in a supervisory capacity on a variety of electrical and related installations supplemented by the following additional qualifications set forth in the Florida Building Code: As required by the Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB), certified as a Mechanical Inspector from the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) and meet at least one of the following qualifications: A. Engineer in the mechanical discipline OR B. Five (5) years construction experience in the mechanical discipline in a supervisory capacity and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master or Mechanical Contractor OR B. Five (5) years construction experience in the mechanical discipline and five (5) years’ experience as a Mechanical Inspector certified by BCAIB and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master or Mechanical Contractor OR C. Seven (7) years construction experience in the mechanical discipline and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master OR D. Ten (10) years’ experience as a Mechanical Inspector certified by BCAIB Current Certificate of Competency or Professional License as a Master or Mechanical Contractor which must be issued by at least one of the following entities: Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board Broward County Central Examining Board Miami Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board Florida Board of Professional Engineers Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Mechanical Contractor License Class A Master Mechanical Certificate of Competency Valid Driver’s License: With proof of automobile insurance Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in installing, maintaining and operating a variety of air conditioning, heating or refrigeration equipment and appliances. Knowledge of possible faults and effects in refrigeration systems and appliances and of standard specifications and devices and corrective measures. Knowledge of local and national building codes as they apply to air conditioning, refrigeration and other mechanical installations and appliances. Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and operations at any stage of the installation. Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, write, hear, speak and be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral, and depth perception. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in a primarily outdoor setting under all types of weather conditions with the added exposure to insects, animals and other hazards.
