Job Summary Manage multiple projects or programs at the highest level of complexity within a matrix team environment. Build relationships and effectively communicate with all project stakeholders including internal and external customers, suppliers, contractors, vendors, and industry peers to achieve project goals and obtain customer satisfaction. Lead project teams in managing multifaceted contractors, as well as, developing and managing performance-based contracts including timely resolution of technical and commercial issues. Lead by example in building trust and achieving results to create a culture aligned with the organization’s values. Maintain an adaptable management philosophy which emphasizes continuous improvement, improved management processes, resource effectiveness, productivity, communications, and financial accountability. Managing all resource aspects including employees, staff augmentation, and consultants/vendor management. Job Description FOCUS -- EPC Gas Turbine Projects LOCATIONS: - Columbus, OH / AEP Corporate Headquarters; OR, - Anywhere in AEP's service territory in these states: OH, WV, VA, KY, TN, IN, MI, OK, TX, LA, AR, with a preference in any of the vertically-integrated operating companies (OPCOs). WHAT YOU'LL DO Plan, organize, direct, coordinate and manage assigned project work activities with expert level of proficiency in all aspects as well as provide guidance of others leading these activities. Skillfully and successfully use project management principles and techniques (Waterfall, Agile) for project management for the organization. Support and hold employees and contractors accountable for the AEP System Safety Process, ensuring a safe working environment focused on Zero Harm. Manage, develop, review, and coordinate the project plan, schedule, budget, tools, and staff as well as provide guidance of others leading these activities. Effectively and efficiently, manage cost and timely reallocation of funding. Effectively communicate project details and status updates. Lead planning meetings and project updates including detailed and complex stakeholder presentations. Ensure those supervised are adequately and effectively prepared for their audience. Provide clear and concise written reports. Develop and actively manage working relationships with project teams, plant and operating company staff, internal and external customers or partners, contractors, vendors, and suppliers. Foster teamwork and actively achieve customer satisfaction. Provide leadership and coaching to project team members to accomplish the same. Provide wide range of detailed guidance, instruction, and training to others to improve designs, systems, processes, procedures, schedules, and costs. Confidently challenge others at the highest level of informed understanding in all aspects of project work. Ensure maximum customer satisfaction and demonstrate highly effective and efficient performance of project work activities on all responsible projects. Lead with character, competence, connection, clarity, support, and accountability to enable others’ success. Represent AEP, as required, with industrial customers, vendors, and regulators as assigned projects dictate. Provide leadership, guidance and support for your assigned projects long range budget and forecast to assure effective development of estimate and cash flow basis, change management of projections, stakeholder communication and acceptance of the budget and forecasts. Provide clarity, support, and accountability to enable others’ success. Use and help align the organization with the AEP project management organizational standards. Manage projects to those standards. Guide the development of contracts aligned with program or project execution strategy. Direct and provide guidance in the management of contracts and contractors. Resolve all issues both technical and commercial in a timely manner or escalate as necessary. Own, develop and/or improve guidelines, procedures, and processes to achieve organizational goals and objectives for continuous improvement. Adherence to the established business unit/corporate policies and standards using established business unit systems and processes, including maintaining pertinent documentation. Have experience with technical solutions related to specifics of the assigned business unit project work. Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies and best practices related to the role as well as have experience in scaling those solutions. Some roles, such as those in the IT organization, will require strong technical capabilities, including all levels of application build. Proven strength in strategic thinking and planning. Proven strength in project risk assessment and mitigation strategies. Highly developed conflict management, effective listening, delegation, and decision-making skillsets. Ability to challenge differing opinions in a very effective manner. High-energy and tenacity in facing difficulty and challenges. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, Project Management, Computer Science, or related field of study dependent on business unit requirements with twelve (12) years of qualified experience (see below); OR, Two (2) years of experience as a PROJECT MANAGER STAFF (Grade 10) is preferred, OR demonstrated competencies, knowledge and skillset through achieved results in a shorter timeline. Qualified experience includes work in project management, major construction field experience, project estimating, project controls, project engineering, and/or comparable internal or external experience in a competitive production environment. Experience must include a demonstrated level of consistently successful project management duties, business acumen and demonstrated proficiency in ALL of the certifying body knowledge areas." Demonstrated mastery level PM knowledge capability in areas of construction safety, negotiations, scope development and control, cost estimating, construction contracting, project controls and reporting, quality control, risk management, etc. Experience in utilities, commercial nuclear power, and/or IT systems is favorable. PMP certification required for this position unless approval to waive the requirement is given by the organization's SVP or OPCO President. Valid state driver's license. Additional Information: Provide effective leadership, team building and meeting management as outlined by the certifying body and the AEP leadership and values. Demonstrate a very high level of ability, motivation, and attitude in leading a team, program, project, and those supervised to success. Effective and compelling communication, including the use of effective listening, with all stakeholders including team members, sponsors, management and senior management. Apply economic analysis techniques and an acumen for the business and profession in project decision making and ensure alignment of project and company financial goals. Influence the Engineering & Design, Procurement, Contracting, Estimating, Construction and Startup procedures and processes to optimize a project. Ensure project teams utilize the latest business unit guidelines and requirements. Identify opportunities for business process improvement across projects or programs and drive implementation. Apply working knowledge of certifying body Project Management tools and techniques and integrate these into internal procedures and processes. Provide strategic thinking, planning, risk assessment and prioritization of project activities. Globally view the project from all angles such as safety, constructability, sequence, changing conditions, contingencies, contractual, predictability, level of priority, sense of direction and sense of productivity to quickly identify and to avoid or to mitigate project risks. Demonstrates very sound decision making practices. Provide organization of project activities, delegate project task assignments, confidently set team requirements and expectations, manage deliverables and hold team members accountable. Provide constructive feedback to project team members. Effectively prioritize and manage conflict to provide solutions to issues that maximize synergies with an overriding goal to do the "right thing" for the company. Take timely independent action, make recommendations, and assist executive management is resolution of elevated issues. Highly proficient in scope management, evaluation of technical solutions, and project risk management. Proficient and highly effective in contract development and management especially skilled in allocating risk between owner and contractor within terms of the contract. Leverage and build relationships with contractors who have long-term strategic value to AEP. Evaluate and determine the skill sets and capabilities of team members then make recommendations and/or provide constructive feedback to ensure project or program success. Act with integrity by demonstrating accountability for project assignments. Seek input from Subject Matter Experts by asking the right questions, understanding the nuances, clarifying and validating information, and not relying on one’s own knowledge base or assumptions. Sensitize experts to influences they have on the project key parameters of project budget, scope, schedule and risk. Strength in developing individuals in their current role as well as the next position. Willing and capable to address poor performance. Safely and effectively Perform light physical duties. Duties can involve construction site walkdown on unstable surfaces, climbing ladders, and awareness of hazardous site conditions Work independently or interdependently as required and execute daily responsibilities with minimal direct supervision. Promote continuous improvement and maintain a strong questioning attitude. Ask intrusive questions and challenge assumptions. Perform work at various AEP locations in varying conditions. Work sites will include home, office, power plants (including nuclear), and construction sites for Distribution, Transmission, Generation, and Telecom infrastructure. Work performed at nuclear power sites may involve work in hazardous areas and possible radiation exposure within the limits prescribed by the NRC. Travel typically 25% or less however greater travel may be required in support of specific assignments. Understand and support the policies, values, principles, structure and behavior of AEP.
