Responsibilities Write clear, engaging, and insightful articles across a broad range of topics, including health, poverty, inequality, technology, demographics, and human rights, for a non‑specialist audience. Collaborate closely with data scientists and visualisation experts to produce relevant data and interactive visualisations that enhance the narrative. Develop arguments based on data and research, maintaining scientific nuance and honesty in reporting evidence. Participate in the editorial process by providing feedback on colleague drafts and helping to shape the publication’s agenda. Take full ownership of article projects, from conception to publication, showing high initiative and independent work. Qualifications Strong track record of single‑authored public writing for a general audience, demonstrating clear, engaging, and data‑driven storytelling. Good understanding of statistics with the ability to interpret and critically engage with a variety of data sources. Experience designing or creating visualisations is preferred but can be taught. Ability to write across a wide range of global topics, demonstrating editorial judgment and an eye for high‑impact content. Commitment to the values and mission of Our World in Data and a demonstrated interest in global issues. Personal Characteristics Critical thinker who adapts viewpoints based on new evidence. Open to editorial feedback and engaged in an iterative writing process. High sense of agency and independence, able to work from concept to completion. Curious, motivated to deepen knowledge of diverse topics. Creativity in presenting information in engaging ways. Sensitivity to diverse perspectives, especially on complex global matters. Compensation and Contract Full‑time, flexible hours – part‑time arrangements possible for the right candidate. £80,000 to £120,000 per year, depending on experience and location. Location: primarily Oxford, United Kingdom, but remote work is available. Candidates must overlap sufficiently with core UK hours; visa sponsorship may be considered. Application Process Application is open until an offer is made. Submissions are reviewed in monthly batches. Initial screening of CV and three links to published articles. Selected candidates are invited to a remote interview and a preparatory exercise. Successful candidates will complete a paid writing residency, producing two sample articles on agreed topics. Completion of the residency and second article can lead to a formal contract offer.
