Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

We are seeking a skilled Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality care to our patients during childbirth and postpartum. The ideal candidate will have experience with high acuity cases and a strong ability to manage labor and delivery situations effectively.

• Level II Trauma Center
• Level IV NICU

Unit Information

The Labor and Delivery unit comprises:

• 34 Labor and Delivery Beds
• 15 Labor Rooms
• 12 Antepartum Rooms
• 4 OB Emergency Department Rooms
• 3 Operating Rooms
• Postpartum: 18 Beds

Patient Care Expectations

The unit experiences up to 300 deliveries per month, primarily managing:

• High-acuity cases: Hypertension, magnesium administration, C-sections (33% c-section rate), preterm labor, and more.
• Postpartum recovery of mothers and newborns.

Patient Ratios

Ratios as per AWHONN guidelines:

• 1:1 ratio for active labor
• 1:2 ratio for non-active laboring patients
• 1:2-3 ratio for antepartum patients, depending on acuity

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• Intermediate FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring) - AWHONN certification

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of high acuity experience in labor management and delivery of high-risk OB patients.
• Ability to triage OB patients and perform cervical checks.
• Experience in interpreting fetal monitoring strips.
• Support in receiving and recovering normal newborns as needed.

Unit Support Staff

Support on the unit includes:

• CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) - 1 per shift
• Scrub Tech (LPN with NRP certification)
• Receptionist/HUC (Health Unit Coordinator)
• Resource RN and Break Nurses scheduled as needed

Technological Competencies

Familiarity with the following is required:

• EMR: EPIC
• IV Pumps: Alaris CareFusion
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
• Fetal Surveillance: Centricity/Qx
• Epidural Pumps: CAD Solaris
• Panda Warmers and Coviden SCDs

Orientation and Training

New hires will undergo a comprehensive orientation:

• 1-day NEO (Neonatal Education Orientation)
• 2 days for general unit orientation
• Followed by 2 weeks on the unit with a preceptor
• 1 week of independent practice

Scheduling and Availability

Shifts are structured as follows:

• 0700-1930 and 1900-0730 for Labor and Delivery RNs
• 1900-0700 for ANM (Assistant Nurse Manager)

While weekend rotations are expected, they may vary based on unit needs. Holiday expectations are fair and equitable.
