Job Title: Maintenance Supervisor

Job Description

The Maintenance Supervisor leads a team of skilled trades employees to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex equipment and manufacturing processes in a high-volume machining environment. This role requires strong technical expertise, hands-on leadership, and consistent application of National and Local Agreements with the United Auto Workers Union, while operating within Global Manufacturing Systems and focusing on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). The position offers the opportunity to deepen automotive and machining knowledge, contribute to the development of manufacturing processes, and support the transition to electric and autonomous vehicle technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a group of skilled trades and maintenance technicians in troubleshooting and repairing complex equipment and processes in a machining plant.
  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance activities on CNC machines, machining centers, and related equipment to minimize downtime and ensure reliable production.
  • Read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic blueprints to guide maintenance activities and diagnose issues accurately.
  • Apply automotive and mechanical knowledge to evaluate equipment performance and ensure that maintenance practices support production quality and throughput.
  • Work closely with the Mechanical Service Information Development team to validate service procedures and ensure they are accurate, safe, and practical for implementation on the shop floor.
  • Collaborate with Validation and Labor Time Technicians to ensure all service procedures are valid, optimized, and time studied for labor time guides.
  • Utilize multiple source files and technical documentation to identify appropriate content for use in maintenance and service publications.
  • Support special projects that impact Labor Time Guides, including process improvements, equipment changes, and new product introductions.
  • Administer and consistently apply National and Local Agreements with the United Auto Workers Union in day-to-day supervision of union-represented employees.
  • Adjust manpower and maintenance resources in a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing environment to respond to production issues and changing priorities.
  • Work cross-functionally with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to resolve equipment and process issues and to implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Use independent judgment within the limits of Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) to make technical and operational decisions that support SPQRCE metrics.
  • Monitor and promote safety practices, ensuring that maintenance work is performed safely and in compliance with plant and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with team members, leadership, and cross-functional partners regarding equipment status, maintenance plans, and production impacts.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills by analyzing root causes of equipment failures and implementing sustainable corrective actions.
  • Manage ambiguity in operations by prioritizing tasks, making timely decisions, and maintaining production support during unexpected issues or changes.
  • Provide coaching, direction, and feedback to maintenance team members to support their development and ensure high performance.
  • Support data-driven and continuous improvement initiatives by using maintenance and production data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain flexibility to work across 2nd and 3rd shifts, including extended hours and consecutive weekends, to support plant operations and maintenance coverage.

Essential Skills

  • Direct supervisory experience of at least 1 year in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in automotive or high-volume production.
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing and production operations, with the ability to operate effectively in fast-paced settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust manpower, respond quickly to production issues, and manage ambiguity in daily operations.
  • Experience working with union-represented employees and exposure to union environments, including administration of agreements.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic blueprints.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong mechanical skills related to maintenance and repair of industrial equipment.
  • Hands-on experience in maintenance repair activities, including troubleshooting and resolving equipment issues.
  • Experience with maintenance supervision or skilled trades supervision in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills to diagnose problems and implement effective solutions.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and manage competing priorities.
  • Willingness to ask questions, take initiative, and be resourceful in solving problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective coordination and reporting.
  • High level of integrity and the ability to operate independently with limited direction.
  • Comfort working in a data-driven environment with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Shift flexibility, including the ability and willingness to work 2nd and 3rd shifts and extended or consecutive weekends as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in a machining plant or machine shop environment, particularly with CNC machining operations.
  • Knowledge of CNC machines, machining processes, CAM shafts, and connecting rods.
  • Experience with Machine shop or CNC machining operations and related maintenance requirements.
  • Prior exposure to Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) or similar structured manufacturing systems.
  • Familiarity with SPQRCE principles (Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment) and their application in daily operations.
  • Experience supporting special projects that impact labor time guides, service procedures, or process documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate with Mechanical Service Information Development teams and Validation/Labor Time Technicians.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills to collaborate effectively with varying levels of the organization.
  • Self-directed work style with the ability to handle ambiguity and make decisions within established procedures.
  • Experience applying automotive knowledge to maintenance, service information, or technical publications.

Work Environment

This role is based in a machining plant specializing in CNC machining operations for components such as CAM shafts and connecting rods. The environment is a high-volume, fast-paced production facility where work requires technical decision-making within established Global Manufacturing Systems and an emphasis on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). The standard workweek includes Monday through Friday, with weekend work required. Candidates should expect to work 2 to 3 consecutive weekends before receiving a weekend off, and there is active discussion that Saturday and Sunday could become regular workdays with alternative days off such as Wednesday and Thursday. The position requires flexibility to work both 2nd and 3rd shifts. The 2nd shift typically runs from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with an expectation to arrive 30 minutes prior and stay 30 minutes after the scheduled shift. The 3rd shift typically starts Sunday night from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., also with an expectation to arrive 30 minutes before and stay 30 minutes after the scheduled shift. The facility operates with industrial machinery, CNC equipment, and standard manufacturing safety practices, and employees should be prepared for a structured production environment with clear procedures and performance expectations.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.
