Description:
Under general direction, observes and practices sterile technique.
Maintains asepsis and anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed.
Actively participates in patient care and safety.
Utilizes operating room supplies conservatively and operates as a team member of the staff.
Follows infection control policies and procedures.
Demonstrates expertise in surgical scrub technique.
Adheres to principles of sterile technique preoperatively and intra-operatively.
Assists the surgeon when needed with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing of instruments and related items during procedures.
Anticipates the surgeon's need for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
Maintains an organized operative field at all times by keeping instruments clean and in their proper place.
Keeps an accurate count of sponges, tapes, needles, dissectors, and instruments.
Prepares for cases by assembling supplies and equipment in accordance with preference cards.
Identifies conflicts or problems and cares appropriately for instruments and supplies after each case.
Provides a safe surgical environment for the patient.
Identifies potential hazards to the surgeon and assists in preoperative checks of equipment.
Displays knowledge of potential hazards within the operating room.
Utilizes experienced staff as a resource and acts as a resource for new personnel.
Assists in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under the direction of the surgeon.
Handles and identifies specimens per policy.
Expedites the effective and efficient turnover of the operating room between cases.
Takes rotating call duty.
Will perform additional responsibilities as requested.
Schedule may include working in general operating room if neurosurgical volume is low.
Call hours may consist of 1 to 2 call shifts per week.
Includes 1 to 2 weekends per month, totaling 24 hours each Saturday and Sunday.
Preferred skills include previous operating room experience and surgical technologist experience.
