This recruitment is hiring for the Point Vicente Interpretive Center . The Point Vicente Interpretive Center is a local museum showcasing exhibits that highlight the natural and cultural history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Operations include a gift shop, facility rental/wedding venue, museum, native plant garden, whale watch destination and scenic park grounds and trails.

Initial interviews will be conducted on video with a follow-up department interview if applicable. A pool of qualified candidates will be established to fill future vacancies as they become available.
The Recreation and Parks Department is responsible for managing and operating a comprehensive park system, administering services in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve and coordinating numerous community activities and events. The Recreation and Parks Department oversees departmental administration, recreational facilities, programs and classes, special events, the REACH program serving the needs of the developmentally disabled community, support services, and open space management.

Essential Job Functions
Responsibilities may vary slightly from site to site, but generally fall within these functions. • Monitors and ensures the safe use of program facilities, enforcing rules and ordinances as needed.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization of recreational facilities, storage sites, and work areas; secures equipment and materials at the close of activities.
• Conducts facility and grounds safety checks, opens and closes facilities and park grounds, and collects entrance fees (if applicable).
• Responds to patron inquiries and provides assistance as needed.
• Assists with facility rentals, including setting up and taking down tables, chairs, and equipment and also with planning and executing events and programs
• Uses facility reservation software to manage bookings and maintain databases.
• Handles general customer service and administrative tasks, such as answering phones, greeting patrons, processing transactions, data entry, copying, and filing.
• Develops and distributes program materials, including flyers, calendars, brochures, and registration forms.
• Manages inventory and orders materials and equipment; tracks and maintains program supplies.

• Operates gift shop, including processing transactions, documenting sales, and preparing bank deposits.
• Issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies.
• Observes and enforces safety protocols, making proper use of safety equipment as required.
• Trains new employees by demonstrating proper work methods and procedures.
• Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed, materials used, and program participation.
• Leads recreation activities and community outings for programs serving adults with special needs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines
Knowledge of:

• Safety principles and procedures, including basic first aid, CPR, and AED for adults and children.
• Basic safety protocols and procedures related to recreation program area(s) and facilities.
• Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, basic record keeping, arithmetic, and computer applications related to the work.
• Safe work practices, including proper driving techniques and workplace safety regulations.
• Basic computer skills and software applications relevant to the role.
• Cash handling procedures and register operation.
• Proper English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with people of all ages, backgrounds, and communities while representing the City professionally.
• Customer service techniques to provide a high level of service to the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.

Ability to:

• Work independently while overseeing facilities and user groups.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

Licenses and Certifications:

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.
• Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate for infant, child, and adult within 30 days of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and walking on uneven surfaces while participating in recreational activities.


Employees must have the ability to perform regular office duties, including using a computer, and must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds as needed.
Environmental Elements

Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors, with occasional exposure to loud noise levels, as well as windy, cold, or hot temperatures. Employees may interact with upset staff, community members, or private representatives while interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. The position works a variable schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. On occasion, it may be necessary to attend meetings, trainings or events at other site locations, so you will need to be able to move between sites when needed.
This is an at-will, part-time position represented by AFSCME District Council 36. This is a variable-hour position with no guarantee of any specific hours, but with a work week limitation of up to 20 hours per week, not to exceed 999 hours in a CalPERS fiscal year. Work hours and shifts vary depending on assignment, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Location hours may vary seasonally. You must be available to work a minimum of one full weekend per month.

As a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), you may be asked to carry on with your work as usual, or you may be asked to do something completely different than your everyday job. There are many different ways to assist during a disaster because each situation is unique. Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees take and subscribe to an oath by the City Clerk's office declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need. The oath reaffirms an employee's willingness to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California.

MEDICAL : Part-time employees who work 1,560 hours in a 12 month period and average 30 hours per week during the City's measurement period will receive an offer of affordable minimum value health insurance as required by law.

SICK LEAVE : An eligible employee shall accrue paid sick days at the rate of one (1) hour per every thirty (30) hours worked, beginning at the commencement of employment and will accrue paid sick leave for use beginning on the ninetieth (90th) day of employment. All paid sick leave is capped at eighty (80) hours per calendar year, including if rolled over from the prior year, and has no vested interest or cash value.

and employee families.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT : The City provides a tuition reimbursement program to encourage employees to pursue professional growth and development through accredited academic coursework. The course must be related to work within City government, as agreed upon by the City Manager, and class time must not interfere with the employee's normal duties, unless specifically authorized by the City Manager. The maximum amount of reimbursement in a fiscal year shall not exceed $500 per employee participating in the program.

LIFE INSURANCE: Employees are eligible for life insurance on the first of the month following their hire date. The City pays the entire premium on a life insurance policy with a benefit of twice the employee's annual City compensation/salary, up to a maximum benefit of $350,000.
SHORT-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE : All part-time employees are required to participate in the California State Disability Insurance (SDI) program, which provides partial salary replacement benefits when an employee is disabled due to a non-work related illness or injury. The program is funded by employee payroll deductions from the employee's bi-weekly paycheck until a cap established by the State is reached. The benefits and terms are established by the State.

SOCIAL SECURITY : The City will enroll new hires in Social Security.


WORK SCHEDULE : Employees work part-time schedules during the entire workweek and across different shifts each day and with work days and work shifts sometimes changing by season. Accordingly, there are no guaranteed work hours, shifts or days. Work schedules are determined in advance by the employee's Department Head and/or their designee. Some part-time positions are limited to work 999 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) and are not guaranteed a minimum number of work hours. Employees may be required to work variable schedule/hours, weekends, evenings and/or holidays.

HOLIDAY OVERTIME PAY : Part-time employees required or scheduled to work on designated holidays shall be paid time and one half of the employee's regular rate of pay. The following holidays are subject to this provision:
