Director, Health & Safety

About the Role

An established organization is seeking an experienced Director, Health & Safety to provide strategic leadership across a geographically dispersed portfolio of operations and projects.

This individual will be responsible for developing and advancing the organization’s Health & Safety strategy, strengthening safety culture, supporting regulatory compliance, and establishing consistent standards and risk-management practices across the business.

The role requires a senior Health & Safety professional who can operate effectively across multiple locations, influence leaders and stakeholders without direct authority, and balance strategic leadership with hands-on execution.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a comprehensive Health & Safety strategy aligned with broader organizational objectives.
• Provide strategic leadership and guidance for Health & Safety programs across multiple business units, locations, and projects.
• Partner with corporate and operational leadership to strengthen and continuously improve the organization’s Health & Safety culture.
• Develop programs and action plans designed to identify, manage, and mitigate Health & Safety risks throughout the lifecycle of projects and operations.
• Advise operational and project leadership on safety programs, compliance requirements, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Support Health & Safety considerations during the evaluation and development of new projects and business opportunities.
• Conduct and oversee internal and external safety audits, inspections, and assessments and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
• Provide guidance related to business continuity, emergency preparedness, disaster response, and other critical safety programs.
• Establish and maintain consistent Health & Safety policies, procedures, standards, documentation, reporting, and training.
• Partner with employees and leadership to address workplace hazards, employee safety concerns, security considerations, and other Health & Safety matters.
• Monitor occupational injuries, illnesses, incidents, and other safety events; identify trends, determine root causes, and implement preventive and corrective actions.
• Lead or oversee incident investigations, findings, corrective action plans, and follow-up activities.
• Ensure accurate Health & Safety reporting and compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and other regulatory requirements.
• Perform other related responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related/equivalent field.
• 15+ years of progressive Health & Safety compliance and leadership experience.
• Demonstrated experience developing and implementing Health & Safety strategies, programs, policies, and standards.
• Experience managing internal and external safety audits and driving corrective actions through completion.
• Strong knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, and other Health & Safety regulatory requirements.
• Experience operating in complex, geographically dispersed organizations.
• Experience working across diverse teams, locations, and operating environments.
• Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders, operational stakeholders, and teams without relying on direct reporting authority.
• Strong communication, judgment, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Experience within transportation, infrastructure, heavy civil construction, or similarly complex operating environments is highly preferred.
• Spanish fluency is highly preferred.
