Government Relations Associate

The Government Relations Associate provides substantive, project management, communications, research, and operational support to the Government Relations & Policy Department and contributes to the department's legislative, policy, and advocacy priorities. The Associate will manage a range of responsibilities requiring strong organization, initiative, judgment, and attention to detail, including monitoring legislative and policy developments, preparing briefing and communications materials, coordinating meetings and advocacy activities, supporting departmental budget management, and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The position is expected to work independently, anticipate needs and next steps, and take ownership of assignments from inception through completion.

Duties:

• Conducts research and analysis on legislative, regulatory, and policy issues relevant to the organization; monitors developments and helps assess their implications for the organization's policy and advocacy priorities.
• Prepares draft reports and analysis regarding implications of government and/or partner actions for policies relevant to the organization.
• Builds and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including preservation partners and organizations with shared legislative and policy interests; coordinates across departments to advance Government Relations priorities.
• Stays informed about current events, legislation and policy issues of importance to the preservation field and the organization.
• Collaborates with other departments and offices of the Trust as required to ensure Government Relations activities are effectively communicated and coordinated with internal and external stakeholders.
• Coordinates and supports advocacy days, meetings, conferences, briefings, and other Government Relations events, including planning, logistics, communications, materials, and follow-up.
• Supports development, monitoring, and reporting of departmental budgets, including tracking expenditures and invoices, and preparing regular budget reports.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• At least three years of professional-level experience, preferably in a government relations, public policy, advocacy, nonprofit, or related environment. Experience coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders in a geographically dispersed organization preferred.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage projects and assignments from conception through completion, including establishing priorities and timelines, anticipating next steps, identifying challenges, and ensuring timely follow-through with minimal supervision.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively across divisions to implement processes and achieve results. Track record of building and maintaining productive and collaborative relationships with multiple stakeholders.
• Ownership and follow-through: Demonstrated ability to take ownership of projects from conception through completion, manage competing priorities, anticipate next steps, and deliver high-quality work with appropriate independence and minimal day-to-day supervision.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and a high volume of requests in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality, responsiveness, professionalism, and composure under pressure.
• Entrepreneurial and proactive approach to work, with demonstrated initiative, creativity, curiosity, adaptability, and enthusiasm for the organization's mission. Willingness to identify opportunities, propose solutions, take on new challenges, and contribute beyond narrowly defined assignments.
• Strong research, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess information, identify priorities, exercise sound judgment, and translate complex issues into clear and useful work products.
• Experience helping to develop, monitor, analyze, and report on budgets.
• Experience in supporting outreach to and engagement of culturally diverse audiences, partners and stakeholders desired; connections to diverse professional or community affinity groups a plus.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to continually develop skills related to emerging technology, communications practices, and project management tools.
• Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and database systems required.
• Bachelors degree or equivalent experience required, graduate degree preferred.
• Regular and reliable attendance is required. The position requires occasional evening and weekend work to support advocacy activities, meetings, events, and other departmental priorities.

Pay & Benefits: This is a full-time, non-exempt level position, eligible for full benefits, including health, dental and life insurance, retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and 3+ weeks of vacation, plus sick time and holidays.

Hiring Range: $31.87( annualized $58,000)-$34.98 (annualized $63,500)
