Polysomnographic Tech

Purpose of the Job A sleep technologist works under the general supervision of the medical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and out-of-center sleep testing. Responsibilities Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information before arrival to identify and meet patient-specific needs during sleep testing. Orient patients to the sleep center, explain the procedure, and prepare them for testing. Select appropriate equipment and calibrate it for testing, ensuring proper functioning and making adjustments if necessary. Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards. Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization. Follow procedural protocols such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), PAP, oxygen titration, etc., to ensure accurate data collection. Acquire polysomnographic data, identify and report signal abnormalities. Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Score sleep/wake stages using professionally accepted guidelines. Score clinical events (respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) using AASM standards. Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform home sleep equipment preparation and data download. Provide patient education and instruction appropriate for home sleep testing. Recognize and provide age‑specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of adult and geriatric patients. Participate in inter‑scorer reliability quality assurance programs as indicated. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Education / Work Experience Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate’s degree with an emphasis in polysomnography. OR successful completion of a polysomnography program of at least one year duration associated with a state‑licensed and/or nationally accredited facility, or equivalent experience and documented proficiency in all competencies required of a Polysomnographic Technician. AND certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technician or equivalent. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of routine and complex equipment care and maintenance. Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions. Ability to respond to study participants’ procedural‑related inquiries by providing appropriate information. Ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy. Ability to communicate in English for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions. License / Certification Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider. Compensation Compensation is determined based on position requirements, experience, education, knowledge, skills, location, and internal equity. Pay listed does not include any shift, weekend, or other differentials.
