At Commonpoint, community is at the heart of everything we do. With more than 90 program sites and flagship locations in Little Neck, Bayside, Forest Hills, East Elmhurst, and Jamaica, we proudly serve over 125,000 individuals each year. From early childhood to older adulthood, we support people from all walks of life on their journeys from crisis to stability and empowerment. Our wide range of programs, spanning social services, education, and recreation, reflects our mission to build a more connected, inclusive, and thriving community for all.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Youth Worker supports the daily implementation of high-quality afterschool programming by helping create a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for youth. Working alongside program leadership and frontline staff, the Youth Worker assists with participant supervision, activity implementation, positive youth development, and daily program operations while supporting DYCD and Commonpoint quality standards.

Across the agency, our seasonal and part-time staff play a crucial role in driving our initiatives forward by supporting daily operations, program delivery, and organizational goals.

  • Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and cross-department teams to ensure clear communication, timely task completion, and a positive, respectful work environment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff, partners, and the public, and promptly report concerns or incidents.

Role Expectations:

  • Support positive behavior using restorative and trauma-informed practices.
  • Report incidents, injuries, and concerns according to agency procedures.

Program Implementation:

  • Support daily implementation of academic, enrichment, SEL, leadership, recreation, literacy, and STEM activities.
  • Encourage youth participation and engagement.
  • Prepare materials, assist with activity setup and cleanup, and support homework assistance as assigned.
  • Assist with family events, showcases, and field trips.
  • Youth Development.
  • Build positive relationships and serve as a positive role model.
  • Foster teamwork, leadership, communication, and social-emotional growth.
  • Reinforce program expectations while encouraging youth voice and participation

Operations & Compliance:

  • Support attendance procedures and required program documentation.
  • Maintain participant confidentiality and follow DYCD, DOE, and Commonpoint policies.
  • Assist with emergency drills and complete all required training.
  • Help maintain organized program spaces and materials.

Professionalism:

  • Participate in meetings, training, and coaching while demonstrating professionalism, flexibility, and accountability.

QUALIFICATIONS & KEY ATTRIBUTES:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent OR at least one (1) year of experience working with children under 13 years of age.
  • Staff must be at least 18 years old to supervise participants independently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with youth and work collaboratively with staff.
  • Successfully complete all required background clearances and agency onboarding requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

We believe in compensating staff fairly and consistently, ensuring that all salary decisions align with our mission-driven commitment to equity and transparency.
