Temporary Hazardous Waste Inspector I The County of Riverside’s Human Resources Temporary Assignment Program (TAP) seeks a Temporary Hazardous Waste Inspector I to support the Department of Waste Resources in Moreno Valley, CA. The position is scheduled for Saturdays only from 6:00am to 4:30pm, with travel to other HWI locations in Riverside County as needed. Responsibilities Assist with Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection operations: greet and register participants, screen and inspect waste loads for compliance, and provide guidance on acceptable materials. Oversee contractor activities, maintain accurate records, and ensure safe, efficient site operations in accordance with environmental regulations and hazardous waste handling procedures. Distribute flyers and educate the public on hazardous waste and proper recycling methods during inspections. Determine acceptability of materials in consultation with a lead supervisor and direct the public to appropriate disposal facilities. Maintain and prepare reports, input data into the database, and conduct minor repairs to safety and emergency equipment. Inspect waste loads from residential, commercial, and industrial generators to prevent hazardous waste from being inadvertently landfilled. Contact senior or supervising Hazardous Waste Inspections when large quantities of hazardous waste or unknown materials are suspected. Inspect waste disposal receipts for proper disposal charges, enforce the waste fee schedule, and draft reports for legal action when necessary. Perform hazardous materials categorization evaluations, collect samples for laboratory analysis, and package hazardous materials for transportation with uniform hazardous manifest bills of lading. Operate trucks and light construction equipment as required. Provide contractor oversight at HHW events and facilities, maintain participant logs, reject non‑compliant loads, and conduct weekly safety and storage tank inspections. Conduct weekly facility inspections, inventory safety supplies, restock public education materials, and maintain first‑responder readiness for emergency response. Obtain evidence of illegal hazardous waste disposal activities and participate in weekly safety meetings. Qualifications Preferred: Education and/or experience in Environmental Science, HHW management, or a related field. Knowledge of hazardous waste handling, environmental regulations, and safety practices. Current HAZWOPER certification is highly desirable; candidates with HHW program experience are strongly encouraged. Experience Options Option I: At least six months physically screening and inspecting waste loads with the County of Riverside, including diversion of waste types and prevention of hazardous waste disposal. Option II: At least six months of professional or technical experience in hazardous waste management, environmental health, environmental engineering, or a closely related field. Possession of a bachelor’s degree in environmental health, hazardous waste management, chemistry, toxicology, water quality, occupational health, or a closely related field may substitute for the required experience. Required Knowledge and Skills Basic principles of solid and hazardous waste management; state and federal laws and regulations governing hazardous waste. Verbal communication, concise report writing, and the ability to establish collaborative relationships. Proficiency with a personal computer and common software programs. Other Requirements Valid California Driver’s License. Upon hire, successful completion of required training courses and certifications, such as the 40‑hour Health and Safety Training for Hazardous Waste Workers, is mandatory. The employee may be expected to work flexible work schedules, including weekends and 24‑hour on‑call status, with overtime often expected.
