About the Position Industrial Commission Investigator (Special Agent) (Position Number 65020434, Grade SW05) is a field‑based role with no office requirements. The investigator travels across various locations within a region to conduct investigations related to workers’ compensation fraud, misclassification, and other statutory violations. Salary: $48,920–$63,176 Responsibilities Conduct criminal investigations into violations of the North Carolina Workers' Compensation Act, including fraud and employee misclassification. Respond to and investigate complaints received by email or phone; identify statutory violations and collect evidence. Prepare accurate and detailed felony reports and maintain relevant documentation. Testify in court proceedings as required. Interview and question multiple individuals to gather information. Maintain professional relationships with external and internal stakeholders, including judicial officials and law enforcement agencies. Attempt service of process of Industrial Commission orders to appear in the Central Region of North Carolina. Qualifications Minimum: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and two years of progressive law‑enforcement experience, including investigative and case‑preparation experience relevant to the assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Law‑enforcement certification: Must meet certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or achieve certification within one year of employment. Proven experience performing and conducting criminal investigations as a Detective or Special Agent. Experience in proper investigative techniques, apprehending criminal suspects, and supporting prosecution of individuals or corporate entities committing crimes. Experience gathering and analyzing evidence and presenting findings in an organized manner for potential prosecution. Knowledge of criminal statutes and case law, including arrest, search and seizure, and related statutes applicable to criminal investigations. Ability to reside in one of the Central Region counties listed at hire or within 12 months.
