Surgical Technologist

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the preparation of the surgical suite. They handle instruments and maintain the sterile field during surgical procedures. The role involves evaluating changing conditions during surgeries and making appropriate responses as needed. The technologist must maintain knowledge of surgical procedures and principles related to those procedures. They may also serve as a preceptor.

Skills and Competencies: The candidate must work effectively and efficiently as part of a team. There should be an aptitude for working with high-tech equipment. Attention to detail is crucial. The applicant must have intact sight and hearing and exhibit good eye/hand coordination, especially for loading and cutting sutures and handling instruments. Excellent written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills are required. Time management and organizational skills are essential. The individual should be self-directed and able to make quality, independent decisions. Analytical and strong problem-solving skills are necessary to work effectively under tight deadlines and high volumes. The ability to maintain strict confidentiality is vital. The technologist must listen to others and be competent in using a variety of computer hardware and software systems. Maintaining confidentiality of information is mandatory.

Essential Functions: The Surgical Technologist must provide sterile instruments and supplies during surgical procedures. They perform surgical sponge, needle, and instrument counts. Creating and maintaining a sterile and safe environment is critical. Preparing case tables with necessary equipment, sterile supplies, instruments, and medications/solutions for each surgical case is required. The technologist assists with positioning patients for surgical procedures, ensuring a protective position throughout the case. They work proactively with physicians to submit changes to preference cards. Suggestions for instrument set changes need to be made to the relevant personnel. Engaging in case costing discussions and suggesting cost-saving measures is important. Participation in safety initiatives and risk mitigation measures is expected. The technologist completes all position and unit safety-related competencies and requirements promptly. Performing other duties as assigned may be necessary.
