Department of Critical Care MedicineFaculty Position - BE/BC Critical Care Intensivist

Our organization is actively seeking board-eligible or board-certified intensivists to join our faculty within the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at UPMC Presbyterian. Key Responsibilities

• Deliver attending-level critical care for a diverse cardiothoracic patient population, including those recovering from cardiac and thoracic surgeries, as well as patients experiencing cardiogenic shock, respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension, advanced heart failure, or complex arrhythmias.
• Manage patients requiring temporary or long-term mechanical circulatory support, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ventricular assist devices, Impella support, or intra-aortic balloon pump therapy.
• Exercise clinical judgment and advanced hemodynamic management while collaborating closely with cardiac and thoracic surgeons, cardiologists, heart failure specialists, transplant teams, perfusionists, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds and develop evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
• Supervise and educate fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers.
• Ensure timely and accurate documentation of patient care.
• Engage in quality improvement, patient safety, and operational initiatives.
• Foster an inclusive learning and clinical environment.
• Potentially provide clinical care in other ICUs within the UPMC Health System based on departmental needs and mutual agreement.

Qualifications

• Applicants must possess an MD or DO degree and be board-certified or board-eligible in critical care medicine by a recognized United States accreditation board, with eligibility for medical licensure in Pennsylvania.
• Base training may include internal medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, neurology, or another relevant field with accredited critical care training.
• Essential qualifications include strong communication skills, professionalism, sound clinical judgment, and a commitment to teamwork, education, patient-centered care, and fostering a respectful and inclusive academic environment.
• Prior clinical experience or specialized training in cardiothoracic critical care, ECMO, mechanical circulatory support, advanced hemodynamic management, perioperative cardiothoracic care, echocardiography, quality improvement, education, or clinical research is preferred but not mandatory.

The faculty within our Department of Critical Care Medicine deliver cutting-edge multidisciplinary care for critically ill adult and pediatric patients throughout the UPMC Health System. We are recognized nationally for our leadership in critical care education, faculty development, quality improvement, and research, with initiatives that encompass clinical care, translational science, population health, implementation science, and health services research.

Position Details

The academic appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the non-tenure stream, depending on qualifications, experience, and academic achievements.
