Shop Foreman
The Shop Foreman plays a critical leadership role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the service department. This individual ensures that the service team delivers high-quality repairs, adheres to brand standards, and maintains exceptional customer satisfaction. The Shop Foreman is responsible for supervising technicians, troubleshooting complex vehicle issues, and managing workflow to meet productivity and efficiency goals.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting technicians in developing their skills.
- Understanding, keeping abreast of, and complying with federal, state, and local regulations that affect service operations.
- Ensuring compliance with manufacturer warranty and policy procedures.
- Ensuring that all department employees receive appropriate manufacturer training.
- Conducting regular performance reviews for all technicians in accordance with dealership guidelines.
- Ensuring that all repairs are assigned to technicians in an equal and fair manner.
- Providing technical support for technicians when necessary.
- Ensuring repairs are charged out correctly.
- Checking progress of each repair order throughout the day.
- Maintaining high-quality service repairs and minimizing comebacks. Conducting periodic spot checks of completed jobs for thoroughness and quality.
- Road testing vehicles to quality-check work performed.
- Accounting for all documents; ensuring that none are missing, and all are processed correctly.
- Establishing and maintaining a customer follow-up program to confirm satisfaction with the service experience.
- Handling all customer complaints within 24 hours, informing other managers as appropriate.
- Managing department performance using tools such as the daily operating control (DOC), efficiency and productivity control, comeback reports, warranty reports, telephone surveys, and monthly forecasts.
- Monitoring technicians' daily productivity reports and corresponding payroll records.
- Monitoring shop condition, including cleanliness, safety, and the condition of shop equipment. Reporting problems to the service manager or dealer.
- Ensuring the proper care, storage, and inventory of special tools.
- Keeping abreast of new equipment and tools available and recommending purchases.
- Filling in for service advisor and dispatcher when necessary.
- Attending managers meetings as requested.
- Striving for harmony and teamwork within the department and with all other departments.
- Maintaining a safe work environment.
- Maintaining a professional appearance.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications include:
- Minimum 3 years of experience, preferably in a high-line or luxury automotive environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree or certification preferred.
- ASE Master Technician certification or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience as an automotive technician.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience in an automotive service environment.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Proficient in dealership management systems (e.g., CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds) and diagnostic software.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Physical requirements include:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks including lying, standing, bending, and handling various tools for extended periods.
- Must have full dexterity and mobility to complete assigned tasks.
- Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and overtime when necessary.
Working conditions include:
- Full-time, including weekends, holidays, and potential evening hours to accommodate our clientele's needs.
- Comfortable working in an air-conditioned shop environment.
- Exposure to varying weather conditionsincluding heat, humidity, and rainshould be expected during vehicle intake, walk-arounds, and customer interactions.
- A polished, professional appearance and demeanor must be maintained at all times, regardless of the working environment.
