Maintenance Planner & Scheduler

Job Description

The Maintenance Planner is responsible for planning, scoping, scheduling, and coordinating maintenance activities for a Tier 1 automotive manufacturing facility. This individual owns the maintenance planning process, drives work management discipline through eMaint CMMS, and ensures maintenance resources are effectively utilized to improve reliability, reduce downtime, and increase planned maintenance execution.

This is a hands-on maintenance planning role requiring strong field experience, maintenance knowledge, and the ability to build detailed job plans, manage backlog health, and drive maintenance process improvements. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in the plant, collaborating with technicians and operations teams, and using maintenance data to improve equipment performance.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintenance Planning & Field Scoping

Conduct field walkdowns to develop complete maintenance job plans.

Define labor requirements, crafts needed, estimated hours, materials, tools, permits, contractor support, and safety requirements.

Build detailed work packages that enable safe and efficient execution.

Maintain an executable 2-4 week backlog of planned work.

Scheduling & Backlog Management

Develop weekly maintenance schedules aligned with labor availability and production requirements.

Prioritize work based on safety, reliability risk, and operational impact.

Monitor backlog health, aging work orders, schedule compliance, and work readiness.

Improve planned versus reactive maintenance performance.

CMMS Ownership & Data Discipline

Serve as administrator and process owner for eMaint CMMS.

Maintain asset structures, PM programs, job plans, BOMs, and task libraries.

Ensure accurate work order coding, labor tracking, failure reporting, and closeout practices.

Train and support maintenance personnel on CMMS best practices.

Reliability & KPI Improvement

Develop and optimize preventive maintenance strategies using equipment history and failure data.

Support root cause analysis and corrective action efforts.

Utilize maintenance metrics to improve equipment reliability and workforce effectiveness.

Planned vs. Reactive Maintenance

Contractor & Shutdown Coordination

Coordinate external maintenance contractors and facility vendors.

Define project scope, obtain quotations, and support procurement activities.

Plan and support equipment shutdowns and major maintenance events.

Ensure contractor work meets plant safety and quality standards.

Skills and Requirements

5+ years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.

3+ years of maintenance planning, reliability, or maintenance supervision experience.

Experience performing field walkdowns and developing detailed maintenance job plans.

Strong understanding of mechanical systems including hydraulics, pneumatics, power transmission, bearings, gearboxes, and rotating equipment.

Experience managing maintenance backlog and weekly scheduling processes.

Proficiency with CMMS systems, preferably eMaint.

Experience with SAP or similar ERP platforms.

Ability to analyze maintenance KPIs and drive reliability improvements.

Experience coordinating contractors and maintenance service providers. Preferred Qualifications:

Tier 1 automotive manufacturing experience.

CMRP or equivalent reliability certification.

Experience supporting automated manufacturing equipment.

Knowledge of IATF 16949 and ISO 14001.
