Posting Number S15150P Working Title Senior Safety and Compliance Officer Department VPR-Research Safety Position Summary The Senior Safety and Compliance Officer (SSCO) leads staff supervision and oversees all related programs in the Office of Research Safety-Chemical (ORSC) within the Office of Research Safety (ORS). The SSCO directs chemical and laboratory safety programs, including laboratory inspections, chemical inventory, emergency response, training, and policy development, and serves on numerous university working groups. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field of science or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience. Key Responsibilities Direct short- and long-range program goals, objectives, and strategic plans. Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of programs and implement service improvements. Analyze work processes and investigate quality and efficiency improvements. Identify and address needs for new or updated policies and programs. Develop, review, update, and deliver chemical laboratory safety training. Assess resources and equipment to support program objectives. Supervise, lead, and provide direction to ORSC team members. Promote professional development of staff and make staffing decisions. Maintain and update the Chemical Safety Manual and other guidance documents. Communicate regularly with staff, provide performance reviews, and counsel on policy, regulations, and training. Serve as the authority on work assignments and disciplinary decisions. Report findings, conclusions, and recommendations in clear, accurate reports. Implement continuous quality improvement using quantitative and qualitative metrics. Act as a liaison to the Research Safety Committee and other campus stakeholders. Participate in hazard response and on‑call emergency teams. Assist with hazardous materials spill response, HAZWOPER training, and emergency coordination. Coordinate scheduling of on-call rotations and maintain PREHS operations manual. Lead cross‑training efforts and provide workforce continuity. Support budgeting, staffing, and business continuity planning with the ORS Director and AVP. Represent ORS at campus meetings and provide safety expertise. Other duties as assigned by the ORS Director and AVP. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Professionalism and integrity in safety and compliance programs. Leadership and customer‑service orientation within a team. Consensus‑building and ability to navigate diverse safety concerns. Independent working style with minimal supervision. Strong oral and written communication. Ability to prepare clear, accurate reports. Experience with continuous quality improvement. Knowledge of state, federal, and national safety regulations. Ability to respond to critical safety situations. Training and education program assistance. Multitasking in varied safety service settings. Proficiency in chemical and laboratory safety assessments. Proficient with Microsoft Office and standard office software. Physical Demands Work in diverse environments including labs, animal facilities, and outdoor areas. Wear personal protective equipment, including respirators. Climb stairs, lift, twist, kneel, turn; occasionally lift 50 lbs. Stand, walk, and navigate awkward work locations.
