Video Journalist, Visual Investigations
$113.27k - $145kThenewyorktimes
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for. The Times’s Visual Investigations team is at the forefront of accountability journalism. We are looking for an exceptional journalist with extensive video production and storytelling experience and passion for open‑source investigations. You will focus on ambitious investigative and explanatory work on competitive news stories and longer‑term projects. You are a dogged reporter with a track record of producing compelling videos with a range of run times. You have deep experience conducting investigations, cultivating sources, mining documents and uncovering new information. You also have the ability to confidently produce in the field from a range of national and international locations, guide cinematographers and all aspects of shoots, write visually driven scripts, and collaborate closely with video editors and other reporters during post‑production. You are someone who can take initiative on major stories and develop exclusive angles. Experience with visual analysis is a plus; you will typically be collaborating with open‑source investigative reporters on the team who specialize in visual verification and advanced digital sleuthing. You must have the know‑how to understand how visual evidence fits into a broader story, connect dots around chaotic events and combine open‑source techniques with traditional journalism to hold power to account. This is an opportunity to innovate with new forms of Visual Investigations storytelling that combine elements of field shooting and reporting with state‑of‑the‑art forensic analysis. A collaborative spirit is a must. This is an in‑office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities Seek and drive compelling video‑driven Visual Investigations stories. Pitch news and enterprise coverage opportunities. Carry out all aspects of video production, including research, reporting, producing and writing. Produce video stories in a range of formats. Report in the field in a variety of settings — such as protests, the aftermath of violent events such as shootings, and potentially, conflict zones. Apply traditional journalism skills, including cultivating sources and analyzing documents and data. Collaborate with other Visual Investigations reporters, video editors and motion graphics colleagues, as well as other teams in the newsroom. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. This role reports to a Senior Producer in Video. Basic Qualifications 5+ years of journalism experience in a digital or broadcast newsroom. Experience with all aspects of video production, including strong pitching, writing, reporting and producing skills, including during the video edit. Experience reporting and producing video under tight deadlines. Proven ability to meet deadlines and adapt to a daily, unpredictable news cycle and production environment. Proven knowledge of current events, both in the U.S. and internationally. Strong portfolio of stories that demonstrate accountability and/or exclusivity. Demonstrated strong editorial news judgment. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others. Preferred Qualifications Experience with visual analysis, such as verifying user‑generated content, Google Earth Pro, satellite imagery, or flight‑ and ship‑tracking platforms. Foreign language skills. General knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for third‑party and acquired visuals. Willingness and flexibility to travel on short notice, and also work evenings and weekends as needed. The annual base pay range for this role is between $113,270.67 – $145,000 USD. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company‑matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs. For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.
