1st Class Shipfitter

Job Summary:
A 1st Class Shipfitter is responsible for laying out, fabricating, assembling, fitting, and installing structural components aboard ships and marine vessels. This skilled tradesperson interprets blueprints and shipyard drawings to construct, repair, and modify ship structures, ensuring compliance with quality standards, specifications, and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and shipyard specifications.
• Lay out and fit structural components including bulkheads, decks, frames, foundations, and hull sections.
• Measure, mark, cut, shape, and assemble steel plates and structural members.
• Operate hand tools, power tools, burning equipment, and fabrication machinery.
• Perform tack welding as required to secure components prior to final welding.
• Align and install structural assemblies using levels, measuring devices, and precision tools.
• Verify dimensions and tolerances to ensure compliance with design requirements.
• Assist with vessel construction, repairs, and modernization projects.
• Collaborate with welders, supervisors, engineers, and quality inspectors.
• Maintain a safe work environment and comply with OSHA and shipyard safety regulations.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Successful completion of a shipfitter trade test.
• Ability to read and interpret shipbuilding blueprints and structural drawings.
• Strong knowledge of ship construction methods and fabrication techniques.
• Proficiency with measuring instruments and layout tools.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Experience

• 3–5+ years of shipfitting experience in a shipyard environment.
• Experience working on naval, military, commercial, or offshore vessels.
• Knowledge of shipbuilding standards, structural fabrication, and marine construction practices.
• Experience with steel fabrication, burning, fitting, and alignment procedures.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and equipment.
• Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and enter confined spaces.
• Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, and work in physically demanding environments.
• Ability to work overtime, weekends, and varying shifts as required.

Work Environment

Work is performed in shipyards, dry docks, fabrication facilities, and aboard vessels under construction or repair. Exposure to noise, welding operations, weather conditions, and confined spaces is common.
