Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This position is located at Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Federal employees in Alaska are currently entitled to receive a 1.49% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in addition to the base salary. This is subject to change.

Duties

Help

• Serve as a cook in a cohesive kitchen team environment alongside other cooks (military and/or civilian), and other food service workers.
• Maintain proper temperature for all foods during holding, transport, reheating, and serving to assure food safety and quality control.
• Practice first in and first out (FIFO) when using ingredients.
• Store or dispose of leftovers in accordance with food safety and sanitation procedures.
• Perform a wide variety of daily housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean and sanitized facility in accordance with food safety and sanitation procedures.
• Coordinate with supervisor to ensure that end of shift/day cleaning standards are met prior to departing for the scheduled work day.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• A Personnel Security Investigation is required.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) : Ability to do the work of a(n) Cook ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties as a Cook. I have the ability to adjust standardized recipes for the number of servings required in large quantity cooking and maintaining a clean and sanitized facility in accordance with food sanitation regulations. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

• PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The work involves frequent lifting or moving of objects weighing up to 40 pounds; constant standing and walking; and occasional lifting of objects weighing over 40 pounds (with the assistance of a lifting device or other workers). Ability to clean/sanitize equipment and work area.

• WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a kitchen that is often hot and noisy. Cooks are exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking. They may also be exposed to extremes in temperatures when entering walk-in refrigerators from a warm kitchen environment. There is danger of slipping on wet floors from mopping or where food has been spilled. Cooks are subject to possible burns from steam, hot foods, stoves, grease, etc., and possible cuts from knives and electrical machines.
