Job Description

The Transportation Supervisor provides leadership and oversight for the daily operation of the district's transportation department, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of students. The supervisor is responsible for transportation personnel, routing, fleet coordination, regulatory compliance, and maintaining high standards of customer service while supporting the district's educational mission.

Essential Responsibilities:

Transportation Operations

• Plan, organize, and supervise the daily operation of the district's transportation department.
• Coordinate safe and efficient transportation for students to and from school and school-sponsored activities.
• Develop and maintain bus routes and schedules to maximize efficiency while meeting student needs.
• Monitor daily routes and respond to transportation issues, delays, emergencies, and changing student needs.
• Coordinate substitute drivers and route coverage to ensure uninterrupted service.

Personnel Leadership

• Supervise, support, and evaluate bus drivers, bus aides, and other transportation staff.
• Assist with recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and retaining qualified transportation personnel.
• Coordinate and document required training, professional development, and safety meetings.
• Promote a positive workplace culture focused on safety, accountability, professionalism, and customer service.
• Address employee performance concerns and recommend disciplinary action when appropriate.

Safety and Compliance

• Ensure compliance with Ohio Department of Education and Workforce transportation regulations, Ohio State Highway Patrol requirements, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requirements (when applicable), and district policies.
• Monitor driver qualifications, licensing, physical examinations, and required certifications.
• Coordinate state bus inspections and maintain records required by state and federal agencies.
• Investigate transportation incidents, accidents, and student discipline referrals occurring on school buses.
• Develop and implement safety procedures and emergency response protocols.

Fleet Management

• Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules and repair activities with district mechanics or contracted service providers.
• Monitor vehicle condition, maintenance records, fuel usage, and fleet replacement needs.
• Assist in planning for future bus purchases and fleet management.
• Ensure transportation equipment is maintained in safe operating condition.

Budget and Financial Management

• Assist the Treasurer and Superintendent in developing and managing the transportation budget.
• Monitor expenditures related to fuel, repairs, parts, equipment, and contracted services.
• Review invoices and authorize purchases consistent with district purchasing procedures.
• Seek opportunities for operational efficiencies and cost savings.

Communication and Customer Service

• Serve as the primary contact for parents, school administrators, and staff regarding transportation concerns.
• Communicate route changes, delays, and emergency information promptly and professionally.
• Work collaboratively with principals, special education staff, and other district personnel to meet student transportation needs.
• Foster positive relationships with families, community partners, and public safety agencies.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate transportation records, reports, and required documentation.
• Utilize routing and transportation software to manage student transportation services.
• Prepare reports for district administration, the Board of Education, and state agencies.
• Assist in developing and updating transportation procedures and department goals.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma required; associate's or bachelor's degree in transportation management, business administration, education, public administration, or a related field preferred.
• Previous experience in school transportation, logistics, fleet management, or supervisory leadership preferred.
• Valid Ohio Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements or the ability to obtain one.
• Ohio Pre-Service School Bus Driver Certification or ability to obtain required certifications.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Ohio pupil transportation laws, regulations, and safety standards.
• Experience with transportation routing software and student information systems preferred.
