Associate, Museum Educator Overview Under the National Urban League (NUL) The Urban Civil Rights Museum in Harlem seeks an Associate, Museum Educator to lead guided tours for K‑12 schools, private groups, and the public during museum hours. Serving as primary liaisons between the museum and the public, educators provide quality educational experiences for visitors and are expected to practice and maintain high professional standards for museum tours and related education programs. Annually, educators can expect to engage a wide range of walk‑in visitors and facilitate with tour participants from a variety of backgrounds such as local residents, tourists, university students, scholars, professionals, seniors, businesses, conference participants, activists, artists, government representatives, and members from religious, community, and civic organizations. Reporting directly to the Director, Learning and Engagement, the Associate will develop and facilitate exhibition‑driven museum tours, in‑school, out‑of‑school and other classroom‑based hands‑on programs, teacher and educator professional development, and develop curricula as needed. When not leading tours, each educator will develop and be charged with an education specialty. Each of these areas will, potentially, include digital learning components. Responsibilities Essential Functions: Lead tours for K‑12 students, private groups, community organizations, and public audiences. Develop and facilitate inquiry‑based tours and educational experiences grounded in museum training and materials, exhibition content, and independent research. Contribute to the development and ongoing refinement of tour menus, interpretive materials, and exhibition Deep Dive resources. Design and facilitate workshops, gallery activities, and educational programs for K‑12, youth, family, and intergenerational audiences. Develop curriculum and materials for K‑12 schools and resources for teacher professional development connected to museum exhibitions and curricular themes. Support adult learning experiences, public programs, the docent training program, weekend offerings, and special celebratory events. Track program participation data and assist with quarterly and annual reporting needs. Support education administration, including monitoring group payments, maintaining records, and assisting with program logistics. Organize, and maintain educational supplies, materials, books, and equipment. Assist in developing and distributing education‑related communications, including e‑newsletters, flyers, and outreach emails. Work collaboratively and thoughtfully across departments including Visitor Services, Security, and fellow Education staff to support a welcoming visitor experience. Participate in staff training, departmental meetings, and professional development opportunities. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred in Museum Studies, Fine Art, History, Communications or related field. Experience: Minimum of 3‑5 years of relevant professional experience in a museum, school, or nonprofit setting. Experience collaborating across interdisciplinary divisions. Experience working in museums or with arts and cultural institutions. Experience teaching in museum or K‑12 education contexts, working with people with physical or cognitive disabilities, and/or teaching English language or multilingual learners (ELL/MLL). Previous experience with object‑based and inquiry‑based learning is a plus. This position is hybrid. Skills & Knowledge: Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and SharePoint. Strong written and verbal communication skills are important. Collaborative team player. Must demonstrate maturity, professionalism, integrity, accountability, and solid judgment. Knowledge of African American history, arts, and culture and/or familiarity with Harlem and local neighborhoods is beneficial but not required. Bilingual a plus, Spanish preferred. Working Conditions: This position is on a Wednesday to Sunday in person schedule. May require working nights as needed. This position may be hybrid when the museum is closed. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times. Prolonged periods of walking and standing lead tours and facilitating workshops. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, sit, and climb for extended periods of time to move supplies, chairs, and tables, as well as set up programming spaces.
