Advanced Medical Support Assistant

We are seeking qualified Advanced Medical Support Assistants (AMSAs) to provide onsite administrative and medical support services at the Dayton VA Medical Center .

The AMSA serves as a foundational member of the patient care team, supporting the administrative and non-clinical functions of Primary Care and helping ensure veterans receive timely, coordinated, and high-quality care.

Responsibilities

• Provide receptionist and customer service support for patients and staff.
• Maintain appointment schedules for one or more clinics or units.
• Schedule and coordinate patient appointments accurately and efficiently.
• Adjust appointment dates, times, and locations when necessary to address clinic access or staffing conflicts.
• Assist with transferring patients to other healthcare providers when appropriate.
• Manage administrative, nonclinical functions of the Primary Care team.
• Task, track, and follow up on patient-related activities from initiation through completion.
• Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Coordinate and communicate with VA and non-VA specialists, hospitals, diagnostic and treatment facilities, and community-based programs as required.
• Verify patient identification using required VA identification procedures.
• Validate and update patient demographic information during check-in and telephone interactions.
• Explain VA requirements for collecting insurance information.
• Collect, scan, and update health insurance information.
• Identify patients with third-party insurance to support the revenue collection process.
• Maintain accurate and complete information in the computerized patient record system.
• Screen and receive telephone calls, determine the nature of requests, and provide appropriate information while following privacy requirements and clinic procedures.
• Review active and pending consults, Recall, and return-to-clinic lists for accuracy and disposition.
• Participate in daily team huddles and weekly team meetings with the assigned PACT team.
• Establish priorities and deadlines and adjust workflow to meet team and patient needs.
• Perform additional administrative duties as assigned to support efficient daily operations.

The PWS identifies scheduling, customer service, demographic updates, insurance collection, telephone support, medical-record updates, consult/Recall review, and participation in PACT team coordination as core AMSA responsibilities.

Qualifications

• 2–3 years of relevant experience, or certification from an accredited institution related to medical administration.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with veterans, families, healthcare providers, and administrative staff.
• Ability to maintain accurate scheduling and patient information.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Ability to handle sensitive patient information in accordance with VA privacy and HIPAA requirements.

Contract staff will provide services onsite . Primary Care clinic hours are generally 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM , with scheduling subject to the needs of the facility.

Compensation

$22-24/hr

Additional Requirements

AMSAs must comply with applicable VA policies, privacy requirements, security requirements, mandatory training, and facility procedures. Contractor personnel may have access to VA patient records for purposes of providing services and must maintain strict confidentiality of patient information.
