The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a world-renowned cancer center dedicated to cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Colon & Rectal Surgical Oncology department is a high-volume, fast-paced clinical environment with a strong culture of teamwork, collaboration, and integrated patient care. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse & Physician Assistant plays a vital role within an APP team that is deeply involved in patient management, clinical decision-making, and multidisciplinary care delivery. UT MD Anderson is experiencing continued growth within Colon & Rectal Surgical Oncology, creating new opportunities for Advanced Practice Providers to practice at the top of their license. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse & Physician Assistant works within a collaborative team-based model alongside faculty while maintaining autonomous clinical responsibilities. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse & Physician Assistant also benefits from dedicated mentorship, APP leadership support, professional development opportunities, and involvement in quality improvement, research, and APP-led clinical initiatives. The ideal candidate has experience caring for surgical patients, preferably within Surgical Oncology, and demonstrates strong clinical judgment, professionalism, communication skills, and emotional intelligence. Experience with Epic/OneConnect is preferred. Candidates should be prepared to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team while maintaining the ability to independently assess, manage, and coordinate patient care. Patient Assessment & Clinical Management
• Assess, triage, and therapeutically manage patient needs as an integral member of an interdisciplinary team
• Obtain medical histories and perform physical examinations and psychosocial assessments
• Review and interpret physical examination findings, laboratory results, and radiographic studies
• Formulate diagnostic and therapeutic management plans in collaboration with attending physicians
• Manage symptoms, toxicities, and complications related to disease and treatment
• Order consultations, diagnostic testing, and procedures as clinically indicated
Surgical Patient Care
• Manage pre-operative and post-operative patients in coordination with attending physicians and Fellows
• Apply knowledge of cancer pathophysiology, surgical processes, and wound healing in patient care planning
• Perform admission and discharge responsibilities
• Demonstrate proficiency in the care and management of Colon & Rectal Surgery patients
• Collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary teams across the continuum of care
Procedures, Treatment & Documentation
• Perform procedures in accordance with institutional and state requirements
• Prescribe treatments and sign prescriptions as authorized by applicable regulations
• Screen physician calls and educate patients and families regarding care and available resources
• Document all pertinent patient information accurately within the medical record according to institutional policy
• Communicate verbally and in writing with physicians, team members, and external care providers
Patient Education & Care Coordination
• Provide patient-focused care through effective communication, personalization of interactions, emotional regulation, and proactive problem-solving
• Educate patients and families regarding colorectal oncology care and treatment plans
• Facilitate communication between patients, families, primary teams, and multidisciplinary providers
• Coordinate care across multiple clinical settings and patient populations
• Support positive patient experiences through collaborative care delivery
Research, Professional Practice & Operational Support
• Participate in clinical research activities and assist with eligibility assessments
• Monitor and document toxicities and side effects associated with investigational treatments according to protocol requirements
• Participate in on-call rotations if required during institutional shutdown events
• Maintain required licensure and continuing education related to clinical appointment and professional licensure
• Contribute to department initiatives, quality improvement activities, and clinical advancement efforts Participates in on-going learning and demonstrates application of it in his/her role.
