School Nurse

Certification(s) and/or Degree: Licensed Nurse / NJ School Nurse Certificate / Bachelor's Degree Reports to: Executive Director

The School Nurse will manage and coordinate the assigned school's health services program based on requirements established by school division policies, procedures, and protocols, and by local, state and national regulations and statues; maintain and operate the school clinic.

Job Duties

• Ensure compliance with procedures, protocols, and other instructions provided by the coordinator of health services or contained in division manuals and protocols.
• Provide nursing care and physical screening to students; assess students and implement first aid measures for students as needed.
• Assume responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management and referral activities for students.
• Counsel with students concerning problems in order to facilitate responsible decision making practices.
• Implement and record required screening programs; notify parents when further medical evaluation is indicated.
• Establish and update health and immunization records.
• Prepare and maintain student clinic records and prepare required reports.
• Administer daily and PRN (as needed) medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by the student's physician.
• Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as needed.
• Orient the staff and teach specific medical procedures for the evaluation and maintenance of the medically involved student in the classroom.
• Provide health education and anticipatory counseling.
• Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
• Maintain clinic equipment and assesses the need for consumable supplies on an annual basis.
• Act as a liaison between the school, home health department professionals, and other community agencies.
• Maintains the integrity and appropriate confidentiality of students' affairs.
• Coordinate presentations by various agencies and professionals on pertinent health care topics for school staff.
• Performs other duties which may be assigned by administration.
• Attends school and student events as outlined in the contract.
• Utilizes electronic forms of communication with parents and colleagues.
• Reports directly to the Executive Director and Principal on all student injuries, medical emergencies and medical issues requiring immediate parental intervention.

Physical Requirements

Intermittent standing and sitting 6-7 hours daily Escorting students to and from various classroom settings, which may require climbing stairs Perform minimal emergency care treatments which may require contact with bodily fluids

Environment Requirements

Individual works in climate-controlled, indoor environment. There are circumstances which may require attendance of outdoor functions.

Resource Requirements

Ability to work on a desktop personal computer or laptop, as required, for the purpose of communicating with colleagues, supervisors and parents. Ability to use clinical/medical equipment. Possess basic pharmacological knowledge.

Ability to communicate effectively and respectably, both verbally and non-verbally Ability to develop trusting relationships with students, parents, colleagues and supervisors

Proof of US Citizenship or legal resident alien status Evidence that a criminal history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education Evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities, with reasonable accommodations Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test
