Job Title Systems Engineer II – Reliability Test Engineer (Optical Inter-Satellite Link) Job Description This Systems Engineer II role focuses on reliability testing for next-generation Optical Inter‑Satellite Link (OISL) systems that support a large low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation delivering global broadband connectivity. You will plan, coordinate, and execute environmental and reliability tests on optical systems, components, and subsystems to ensure they meet stringent qualification and lifetime requirements. The position emphasizes hands‑on work with environmental chambers and test equipment, close collaboration with design, reliability, manufacturing, and quality teams, and detailed analysis of test data to drive design and process improvements. Responsibilities Plan and coordinate environmental and reliability tests, including thermal cycling, HALT/HASS, vibration, and life testing on OISL opto‑mechanical assemblies and components. Work closely with laboratory teams to schedule tests, manage test queues, and ensure efficient use of environmental chambers and related equipment. Set up, operate, and monitor environmental test equipment such as thermal chambers, vibration systems, HALT/HASS platforms, and temperature vacuum chambers (TVAC). Handle chamber setup activities, including fixture installation, instrumentation, test article mounting, and verification of test conditions and profiles. Execute test plans and procedures, ensuring tests follow defined reliability and qualification requirements and are documented accurately. Perform statistical reliability analysis, including Weibull analysis, acceleration modeling, and degradation analysis, to characterize failure distributions and support lifetime predictions. Conduct test and screening failure investigations across optical, mechanical, and electrical domains to identify failure modes, mechanisms, and root causes. Support failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and root cause analysis (RCA) activities by providing test data, observations, and technical input. Support implementation of Design for Reliability (DfR) principles by supplying test results, reliability risk assessments, and recommendations to design engineering teams. Document test procedures, test setups, results, and failure analysis reports with clear, actionable conclusions and recommendations. Collaborate with manufacturing and quality teams to define and refine reliability screening and acceptance criteria for optical and electronic hardware. Contribute to continuous improvement of test processes, fixturing, data collection methods, and automation to increase test efficiency and repeatability. Use ticketing systems to manage test requests, track progress, and communicate status to production and engineering stakeholders. Communicate test findings, reliability insights, and recommendations to cross‑functional engineering teams in a clear and structured manner. Assist with PCBA‑level testing, inspection, and failure analysis when needed to support broader system reliability objectives. Apply data analysis or test automation scripting tools to process test data, generate reports, and enhance test workflows where applicable. Essential Skills Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline, physics, or a closely related field. Hands‑on experience operating environmental test equipment such as thermal chambers, HALT/HASS systems, vibration tables, and temperature vacuum chambers (TVAC). Experience with analytical methodologies associated with materials or failure analysis. Experience conducting statistical data analysis to interpret test results and reliability trends. Practical experience with reliability or environmental testing in a laboratory or test engineering environment.Technical understanding of vibration, thermal cycling, and environmental stress testing. Ability to coordinate tests, manage test schedules, and work with production or laboratory teams to execute test plans. Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting procedures, reporting results, and presenting findings. Experience with test coordination, including managing multiple concurrent tests and prioritizing workloads. Hands‑on experience with test chamber setup, including vibration, thermal cycle, and temperature vacuum chambers. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with PCBA‑level testing, inspection, and failure analysis. Proficiency with reliability analysis methods and tools such as Weibull analysis, Weibull++, ReliaSoft, Minitab, JMP, or similar software. Familiarity with reliability and qualification standards such as Telcordia GR‑468, MIL‑STD‑810, MIL‑HDBK‑217, and JEDEC standards. Experience with data analysis or test automation scripting using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools. Experience with optics, opto‑electronics, or optical communication systems. Experience with reliability testing methodologies such as HALT/HASS and life testing. Exposure to test engineering practices, including test planning, execution, and documentation. Ability to troubleshoot test setups, environmental chambers, and test instrumentation. Familiarity with ticketing systems to manage test requests and communicate status. Work Environment The role is primarily laboratory‑based and focuses on direct testing assistance and chamber operations rather than supplier‑facing work. You will work hands‑on with environmental test equipment, including vibration systems, thermal cycle chambers, and temperature vacuum chambers (TVAC), as well as HALT/HASS platforms and other reliability test setups. Typical working hours are approximately 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The environment emphasizes collaboration with production, design, reliability, manufacturing, and quality teams, and relies on structured processes, ticketing systems, and detailed documentation to manage test activities. You will work with state‑of‑the‑art optical and electro‑optical technologies in a professional engineering laboratory setting that values precision, safety, and continuous improvement. Job Type & Location This is a contract position based out of Redmond, WA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $55.00 – $60.85 per hour.
