Position Overview

We are seeking a Quantity Surveyor / Cost Estimator to support a large, technically complex construction project in Boise, ID. This position is ideal for an estimator or quantity surveyor with approximately 5–8 years of construction estimating, cost, or field experience who is comfortable working both in the office and out in the field.

This is a hands-on role. You will regularly walk the project site, validate installed quantities against bills of materials and contractor documentation, review unit rates, evaluate progress, and support monthly payment applications.

The preferred hiring path is Contract-to-Hire , with the opportunity to transition into a long-term direct position. Strong candidates interested only in Direct Hire will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform field walks to verify installed quantities and validate completed work against BOMs, drawings, contractor documentation, and pay applications
• Develop, review, and validate unit-rate build-ups for construction activities
• Break down unit rates across labor, materials, equipment, overhead, and other applicable project costs
• Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and unit-rate workbooks
• Define and track work using measurable units such as linear feet, pounds, inches, quantities, and other construction units
• Measure completed work in the field and apply established unit rates to support monthly payment certification
• Review contractor invoices, progress quantities, and supporting documentation for accuracy
• Evaluate changes, additional work, and project variations using established unit rates
• Monitor actual costs and quantities against project budgets
• Analyze contractor productivity and project efficiency
• Develop a working understanding of trade-contractor productivity factors and compare performance against recognized industry standards, including MCAA and NECA
• Assist project leadership in evaluating, defending, or challenging contractor claims and cost requests
• Work closely with construction, estimating, cost controls, project management, and trade contractors

Ideal Background

• Approximately 5–8 years of experience in construction estimating, quantity surveying, cost engineering, cost controls, or a related discipline
• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or a related field preferred
• Experience working with unit-rate construction contracts
• Strong understanding of labor, material, equipment, and construction productivity
• Experience reviewing BOMs, installed quantities, pay applications, change orders, and contractor pricing
• Comfortable spending significant time walking an active construction site
• Ability to read construction drawings and understand installation scopes
• Strong Excel and numerical/analytical skills
• Experience with mechanical, piping, electrical, or other technical construction disciplines is highly desirable
• Experience on large-scale industrial, advanced manufacturing, semiconductor, or similarly complex projects is a plus

What We're Looking For

This is not a senior executive-level estimating position . We're looking for someone who has developed a strong estimating and cost foundation and still enjoys being close to the construction.

The right candidate can look at the documentation, walk the installation, understand what was actually installed, validate the quantities, and determine whether the associated costs and unit rates make sense.

Local Boise-area candidates are strongly preferred. Relocation/travel support may be available for highly qualified non-local candidates.
