Phlebotomist

Job Summary:


The Phlebotomist Technician is responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients across all age groups and processing accession requisitions into the Laboratory Computer System. This role requires prioritizing stat requests, maintaining accurate documentation, and assisting with specimen transport and processing. The technician will also support general laboratory operations and may travel to various healthcare facilities to collect specimens, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory procedures.

Responsibilities:

• Collect blood specimens from newborns, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
• Respond promptly to stat requests and alert department personnel accordingly.
• Maintain accurate documentation by logging activities and signing required forms.
• Perform accessioning duties including patient identification, test request entry, and specimen labeling.
• Assist with transporting specimen samples between departments as needed.
• Support specimen processing department and assist with incoming specimens.
• Travel to nursing homes, patient homes, and satellite facilities for blood collection as required.
• Cover understaffed areas and assist with general laboratory operations such as glucose tolerance tests and phone duties.
• Comply with departmental and hospital policies, safety practices, and regulatory procedures.
• Promote service excellence and maintain a safe, orderly work environment.
• Respect and uphold patients' rights to care, privacy, and dignity.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Phlebotomy certification.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant phlebotomy experience.
• Experience with Meditech and/or Mobilab laboratory information systems.
• Ability to successfully obtain blood specimens from all age groups.
• Strong documentation and data entry skills.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working in multiple healthcare settings including nursing homes and satellite facilities.
• Familiarity with glucose tolerance testing procedures.
• Ability to assist with general laboratory operations beyond specimen collection.

Special Considerations:

• Must comply with all hospital and laboratory safety and regulatory protocols.
• Role requires travel to various patient care locations within the local area.
• Must maintain patient confidentiality and respect patient rights at all times.

Scheduling:

• Monday to Thursday: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at the Sudbury location.
• Friday: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at the main campus - Concord location.
