Bedford, MA VA Bedford Medical Center | Full Time | 40 hrs/week, Day Shift (8:00 AM 4:30 PM)

Position Overview

We are hiring two full-time Phlebotomists to work on-site in the laboratory at the VA Bedford Medical Center (200 Springs Rd, Bedford, MA). You will perform blood collection and specimen processing for Veterans across inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and urgent/emergency care. The work is performed to Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and Joint Commission standards. The contract is expected to start December 30, 2026, and runs one base year plus four option years.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform patient phlebotomy, including inpatient ward rounds, outpatient draws, Urgent Care/ED, STAT, ASAP, and timed draws.
• Process specimens and prepare send-out specimens for reference testing.
• Positively identify every patient before collection, and every sample before testing or aliquoting.
• Identify, document, and resolve collection, processing, testing, or reporting issues.
• Safeguard electronic and paper patient information in line with VA privacy and HIPAA requirements.
• Deliver patient-centered, professional service to Veterans, providers, and lab staff.
• Work in other areas of the lab as needed, and take part in monthly lab staff and quality-improvement meetings.

Qualifications & Experience

• At least 3 years of recent, hands-on phlebotomy experience (required). Hospital or VA experience is preferred.
• Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association (required).
• Phlebotomy certification (ASCP, AMT, NHA, or equivalent) preferred.
• Fluent in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
• Proof of health requirements before the first shift: negative TB test (TST or IGRA), immunity to MMR and varicella, Tdap, annual flu vaccine, the Hepatitis B series with surface antibody titer, and bloodborne pathogen training.
• Must clear a VA background investigation (Tier 1), be eligible to work in the U.S. (E-Verify), and not appear on the HHS OIG exclusion list.
• Must complete VA-required training: VA Privacy & Information Security, VHA Privacy/HIPAA, and Records Management.

Compensation

$30.00/hour local position; no per diem or travel allowance.

Overtime is available, paid at time-and-a-half.

MondayFriday day shift with no on-call, standby, nights, or weekends. Start times may shift between 6:00 AM and 9:30 AM based on lab needs.
