Summary CYP Assistants work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. The day includes helping children develop social skills such as making friends and conflict resolution, making healthy choices, building self‑help and school readiness skills, and exploring the environment around them. Duties Curriculum Develop schedules and activity plans, reviewing and providing input into plans developed by other program assistants. Ensure program plans and activities incorporate observed needs of individual children and youth. Implement activities and special events that meet the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs of children and youth. Interpret and follow special instructions from parents such as dietary or physical needs. Prepare and implement program options for children and youth with special requirements. Demonstrate, instruct, lead, and facilitate planned and spontaneous program activities. Role‑model developmentally appropriate practice and classroom or activity area management techniques. Promote and model safety, fitness, health, and nutrition practices. Help arrange and/or serve appropriate snacks or meals where applicable. Indoor and Outdoor Environment Prepare, arrange, and maintain indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials. Set up displays and bulletin boards. Conduct inventories of equipment on a recurring basis and recommend replenishment. Secure supplies, equipment, and facilities. Interactions and Relationships Establish a program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions. Interact with children and youth using approved child guidance and youth development techniques. Supervision of Children and Youth Provide care, supervision, oversight, and accountability in compliance with DoD, NAF Component, and local policies. Maintain control of whereabouts and safety of children and youth. Supervise children and youth during daily activities, field trips, outings, and special events. Ensure children and youth depart with authorized persons according to written parental instructions. Observe for signs of illness, abuse, or neglect and report as directed. Parent and Employee Communication Interact professionally with employees, parents, and local installation command personnel. Provide parents with daily verbal or written feedback about their child/youth or program activities. Participate in conferences with parents and employees. Assessment Observe children and youth and document developmental progression and concerns. Use information in planning and program evaluation with designated instruments. Compliance Assist in achieving and maintaining DoD certification and national accreditation. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations for DoD CY programs. Notify supervisor of health, fire, and safety compliance concerns. Additional Responsibilities Collect, maintain, and report program participation data. Perform other related duties as assigned. Requirements Must be 18 years of age or older. Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications required by Federal, State, or national accreditation institutions. Pass all applicable records and background checks. Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing; a positive test is a basis for removal. Pass a pre‑employment physical, provide evidence of immunization, and be free of communicable diseases. Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at time of application. Marijuana is a Schedule I drug; a positive test results in withdrawal of offer and ineligibility for 6 months. This position is a Test Designated Position (TDP) requiring consent to pre‑employment and random drug testing. Starting May 7, 2025, non‑affiliated individuals must provide a REAL ID‑compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to access the installation. Qualifications Applicants must clearly describe experience and knowledge, skills, and ability (KSAs) related to this position. Entry Level (CY‑1702‑01) Communicate effectively in English orally and in writing. Follow verbal and written instructions. Complete all DoN training requirements within the specified timeframe. Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers. Work cooperatively as a member of a team. Intermediate Level (CY‑1702‑01) Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles. Implement developmentally appropriate principles and practices for high‑quality direct care and education. Interpret curriculum or activity plans. Follow written instructions. Plan and organize, and work cooperatively as a team member. Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers. Work cooperatively as a member of a team. Have six (6) months of experience working with children or youth in a child‑and‑youth setting. Target Level (CY‑1702‑02) Knowledge of child and youth development principles to inform efficient program response. Implement developmentally appropriate principles, practices, and services for high‑quality direct care and education. Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers. Work cooperatively as a member of a team. Communicate verbally to provide basic program information and explain CYP processes and procedures. Have one (1) year of experience working with children or youth in a child‑and‑youth setting. Education Provide a copy of high school diploma, GED, or college transcripts showing awarded degree. Additional Employment Conditions Incumbents must satisfactorily complete all background checks for child care positions, including fingerprint checks, a Tier 1 with Child Care check, and a State Criminal History Repository check. All individuals providing child care services on a DON installation or in a DON‑sanctioned program must complete the Installation Records Check (IRC), which includes checks of the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program, Family Advocacy Program, and an installation security/base check via the Navy Justice Information System. The IRC and DoDI 1402.05 establish automatic and presumptive disqualifiers for certain convictions and conduct. Some positions may require a one‑year probationary period and participation in direct deposit within the first 30 days of employment.
