Close Date 6/30/2026 Location 4 Job Description Two part-time positions are available in the Library. Two options are available with the following normal working hours: Position 1: Every other Sunday 1pm to 4:30pm (September through May only). Position 2: Every Thursday 4:30pm to 8pm & Every Saturday 9am to 4:30pm (Year-round). Please indicate which shift option you are interested in. Responsibilities Performs basic as well as higher level clerical functions related to the day-to-day operations of the library in the areas of circulation, technical services, and shelf maintenance. Provides services to library patrons and performs general administrative services. Checks library materials in and out, processes interlibrary loans, and handles new patron applications. Uses independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation, and communication skills to perform duties. Exemplary customer service to library users. Maintains familiarity with library policies and procedures and enforces them as needed. Utilizes SWPL’s integrated library system software and public catalog website at a high competency. Processes circulation tasks including loan and return of books, periodicals, audiovisual equipment; renews materials; places hold requests; prepares items for interlibrary loan; receives fines and fees. Inspects returned books, materials, and equipment for damage. Assists library patrons in the use of library materials or refers inquiries to a librarian. Processes library membership applications and issues membership cards; updates patron information. Sorts and shelves books, newspapers, periodicals, and other library materials. Follows prescribed routines for overdue, damaged, and lost library items. Opens and closes the library. Performs basic cataloging tasks. Registers patrons for programs and room reservations. Maintains records, logs, or other statistical information as directed by supervisor. Effectively works with multiple age groups in different departments as needed. Reports work accomplished to a supervisor. Relieves other employees as directed by supervisor, including responsibility for a unit in the temporary absence of a professional librarian. Receives and responds to general information requests by telephone or in writing. Assists in completing an annual collection inventory. Makes minor repairs to books, documents, periodicals, and materials as needed. Checks in orders received and distributes items to relevant departments as necessary. May prepare posters, bulletins, and newsletters to promote use of the library and its materials. Monitors supplies for reordering. Makes suggestions regarding the purchase of source materials, books, equipment, and supplies needed for the maintenance of the collection. Actively pursues professional growth opportunities, including keeping current of new library trends through readings and workshops. Performs related work and assists with special projects as required. May assist in the preparation and administration of programming. Requirements Bachelor’s degree (preferably in a field applicable to library service) and five (5) years experience working in a library or an equivalent position. Provides a high level of customer service. Maintains a working knowledge of library principles and practices. Maintains moderate computer literacy: familiarity with Microsoft Office/Google Workspace applications, email, intermediate typing skills, able to connect to an open WiFi network, able to download apps on a smartphone. Makes decisions of other than a routine nature in order to meet controlling conditions. Deals with associates and the public in a courteous manner. Effectively communicates with a wide variety of individuals of differing ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Maintains a neat personal appearance and pleasing manner. Applies common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form. Adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides all units of measure. Speaks in public to small and medium-sized groups. Comfortable being recorded. Driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle. Occasionally works outside of normal hours. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
