Assistant Professor Biology ( Histology, Microbiology or Environmental Biology)

Position Overview The Department of Biological Sciences at Prairie View A&M University invites applications for a tenure‑track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting in Fall 2026. The position focuses on teaching introductory biology courses to biology majors, with preference for candidates teaching General Biology, Microbiology, or Environmental Biology to upper‑level students. Important Immigration Information A Presidential proclamation issued on September 19, 2025 imposes a $100,000 fee on new H‑1B petitions filed after September 21, 2025. Texas A&M University will not pay this fee. Additionally, as of January 27, 2026, Texas Governor Abbott issued a moratorium on new H‑1B filings unless approved by the Texas Workforce Commission. Applicants requiring sponsorship should consult their private immigration counsel. The institution may not be able to provide employment visa sponsorship under these restrictions. Responsibilities Teach General Biology I and II lecture and laboratory courses or related biological courses for biology majors. Advise students on degree plan requirements for pre‑professional programs. Mentor and supervise students through academic advising, student organizations, undergraduate research, internships, and departmental activities. Serve on college‑wide and departmental committees, including assessment projects, search committees, and regular department meetings. Create and maintain partnerships with two‑year colleges and four‑year transfer institutions to promote student transfer and increase enrollment in Biology programs. Develop community partnerships to support workforce development and career pathways for Biology students. Identify and pursue external funding opportunities. Conduct and publish scholarly research in the candidate's area of expertise. Develop and sustain an undergraduate research program. Establish and maintain a competitive research program. Maintain competency in the discipline and effective teaching practices through professional development. Maintain regular office hours. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Ph.D. in Biology or related biological fields. Minimum of two years full‑time college teaching General Biology at the undergraduate level. Experience designing and implementing online courses. Experience developing virtual summer bridge programs. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated ability to teach two of the following: General Biology and Histology or Microbiology or Environmental Biology. Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology in teaching and learning. Demonstrated innovation in student‑centered instruction through Course‑based Undergraduate Research Experiences. Demonstrated experience with science teaching pedagogy, curriculum and/or program development. Knowledge of assessment practices and the ability to meet accreditation requirements, including those of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Excellent writing and communication skills as demonstrated through conference participation, workshop instruction, successful grant proposals, and/or publications. Demonstrated effectiveness working in a collaborative, team setting. Preferred Qualifications Post‑doctoral research experience. Three or more years of undergraduate teaching experience. Two or more years of experience in creating budgets and writing/managing grants. A proven record or propensity to obtain external funding to support an active research program. Record of scholarship and publication in higher‑tier journals appropriate to the applicant's field of study.
