The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has an opening for a staff scientist II to be the Director of Sleep Research within the Department's Psychophysiology and Sleep Research Unit (PSRU), a resource for investigators conducting NIH- and Industry-sponsored trials using polysomnography (PSG) and electroencephalography (EEG). Candidates who have a strong background in sleep research and in conducting PSGs, multiple sleep latency tests and/or multiple wake tests are encouraged to apply. The candidate will be expected to work with other investigators to develop and grow the PSRU sleep research portfolio, work independently to manage and maintain the PSRU sleep lab, providing oversight of the sleep techs, equipment and supplies, will be responsible for staffing all sleep studies as well as the financial management and oversight of the sleep lab. The successful candidate should be self-motivated, goal-oriented, and independent, with a primary goal to grow sleep research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Job Duties:
- 35% - Works independently and with other investigators to identify new Industry-sponsored sleep trials. Develops and coordinates grant proposals and/or feasibility assessments to external funding sources. Contributes substantially to the growth and direction of sleep research on the unit, while developing collaborations with other investigators and serving as an expert sleep resource.
- 35% - Creates and implements policies for the sleep unit. Ultimately responsible for all equipment, software, supplies, and team of sleep techs. Manages the work schedule of all sleep techs, including staffing the sleep studies and stepping in to run sleep studies when necessary.
- 20% - Provides training and supervision to new sleep techs, other PSRU sleep staff, and other investigators new to sleep.
- 10% - Develops, oversees, and is ultimately responsible for the budgeting and financial management activities of the PSRU sleep lab. Develops policies and procedures and serves as a resource for all financial management activities. Meets with department administrators on a regular basis for financial management of the sleep lab.
Preferred Qualifications: Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) Certification within 3 months of hire date.
Minimum Requirements: A Ph.D., MD, or equivalent with five years of sleep research/clinical experience is required.

(Frequent) Ability to lower objects, up to 30 lbs., from height of 72 inches to floor level, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to push/pull objects, up to 50 lbs., unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift and carry objects up to 30 lbs. a distance of five (5) floors and to outlying buildings. (Frequent) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually. Ability to work alone in isolated areas, such as darkrooms. (Frequent) Additional New Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license. Computer literacy. Ability to work rotating shifts as required. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
