Staff Associate IThe Staff Associate I in the Department of Neurosurgery, Gill Lab will assist in experiments in the lab, work on own projects in the lab and assist with administrative duties within the lab. This will involve experiments on animals, cell culture and viral vectors, data acquisition and analysis, maintenance of IRB protocols and shipping/handling/purchasing of laboratory inventory.Duties - Mouse handling, breeding and survival surgery including stereotactic surgery – 40% - Cell culture – 10% - Microscopy – 10% - Maintenance of laboratory inventory and protocols – 30% - Presentation at laboratory meetings and scientific conferences – 5% - Publish scholarly reports – 5%Functional Knowledge - Knowledge of the research subject and scientific methods of analysis. Must have knowledge and experience in cell culture/aseptic technique, animal handling, animal surgery and laboratory management.Problem Solving - Excellent critical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills are expected. The candidate will be expected to have a high degree of initiative for problem-solving and the ability to establish new solutions related to the functioning of the lab. Utilizes analytical skills to solve moderately complex problems based on guidelines protocols, and procedures.Leadership - No supervisory responsibilitiesTechnical Expertise - Ability to operate and maintain equipment, computers, software programs and research tools in support of the project. Cell culture animal handling and surgery - Laboratory managementCommunication Skills - Excellent research and writing, communication presentation and organization skills required. Shares information and confirmation of data.Special Indicators - Laboratory animal use or contact with laboratory animalQualifications Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in the Biological Sciences/neurosciences or a closely related field. 1-4 years of experience preferred in a wet lab research environment
