Job ID: 36460 Agency: Department of Education Location: Pierre, SD Salary: $24.13 - $24.74/hr (Pay Grade H) Closing Date: 07/09/2026 Position Overview The South Dakota Historical Society Press is seeking an associate editor to join its editorial team. The role involves preparing manuscripts for publication by editing, verifying statements, fact‑checking, and coordinating with authors, illustrators, map makers, graphic designers, printers, and indexers. The associate editor solicits, reviews, and tracks manuscripts to ensure they meet the Press’s standards, reports to the Director, and contributes to setting press policies and publishing directions. Qualifications

• Advanced degree in history, American Studies, English, Publishing, or a related field.
• Minimum two years of editing experience (preferred).
• Knowledge of American history and the history, culture, and geography of South Dakota and the Northern Great Plains.
• Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, English grammar, Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, copyright law, and research techniques.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Analyze research data and internal structures of written material; Read and extract information from reference materials and other resources; Identify historical errors and resolve problems of fact and conjecture through research; Manage people and establish effective relationships; Organize, schedule, direct, correct, and prioritize simultaneous editing projects; Assist the inventory manager with shipping‑related tasks as needed.
