Maintenance Technician

This role focuses on maintaining and repairing production equipment on the manufacturing floor of a plastic molding facility. You perform preventive maintenance and respond to equipment breakdowns, support machine installations for new products, and ensure extrusion lines and related systems operate safely and efficiently. The position involves extensive work with pneumatic and hydraulic systems, production line setups and changeovers, and interaction with PLC-controlled equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance (PMs) on production machinery to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues on plastic molding and extrusion equipment.
• Install, set up, and commission new machines and production lines for different products.
• Work on extrusion lines to ensure proper operation, quality, and throughput.
• Support production line changeovers by adjusting, configuring, and fine-tuning equipment for new runs.
• Troubleshoot equipment failures using electrical and mechanical diagnostic techniques.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to guide repairs and installations.
• Work with PLC-controlled systems, assisting in troubleshooting equipment controlled by programmable logic controllers.
• Maintain and repair components such as pumps, motors, belts, pulleys, and related mechanical systems.
• Handle electrical systems including 3-phase motors, 240–480V circuits, and relay-based controls safely and accurately.
• Collaborate with production staff to quickly resolve equipment issues and support continuous operations.
• Document maintenance work performed and communicate equipment status and needs to appropriate personnel.

Essential Skills

• Industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
• Strong electrical skills, including experience with 3-phase motors, 240–480V systems, and relay-based controls.
• Mechanical repair skills working with pumps, motors, belts, pulleys, and related components.
• Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues on production equipment.
• Experience working with pneumatic and hydraulic systems in an industrial setting.
• Capability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
• Hands-on experience supporting plastic molding or extrusion equipment on a production floor.
• Comfort working with PLC-controlled machinery and assisting with PLC-related troubleshooting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with plastics manufacturing, particularly injection molding or extrusion processes, is preferred.
• Experience in maintenance within a plastic molding facility is beneficial.
• Familiarity with setting up production lines and performing changeovers.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently during off-shift hours.
• Willingness to work some Saturdays as needed to support production demands.

Work Environment

This is a long-term, third-shift position with typical hours from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., including a 30-minute paid lunch. Some Saturday work is required to meet production needs. The facility is a plastic manufacturing environment, so it can be hot near the machines, especially around the extrusion lines. Six new machines and production lines are being added, creating an evolving, modern equipment mix. The dress code requires steel-toe footwear, jeans, and a work shirt, appropriate for a hands-on industrial maintenance setting.

This is a Permanent position based out of Des Plaines, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $62400.00 - $85000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
