Position Overview

 

The Project Engineer is responsible for supporting the planning, engineering, execution, documentation, and successful delivery of industrial process cleaning projects for customers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, semiconductor, food & beverage, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing industries.

 

Reporting to the Project Manager or Operations Manager, this role develops project-specific engineering documentation, cleaning protocols, flow path diagrams, marked-up P&IDs, and field execution packages to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with customer requirements and Pure Clean quality standards.

The Project Engineer works closely with customers, field operations, project management, quality, and safety personnel to provide technical leadership throughout the entire project lifecycle, from initial planning through project closeout.

Project Engineering & Technical Planning

 

• Develop project-specific cleaning protocols, work instructions, flow path diagrams, and execution plans based on customer specifications and engineering requirements

• Review, interpret, and mark up P&IDs to define circuit boundaries, flow paths, isolation points, equipment tie-ins, and cleaning sequences

• Assist Project Managers in developing project schedules, resource plans, equipment requirements, and execution strategies

• Support engineering reviews, constructability assessments, and technical planning meetings

• Identify project risks and recommend engineering solutions to improve execution and efficiency

Project Execution Support

 

• Provide engineering support during field execution of passivation, derouging, oxygen cleaning, sanitization, biofilm removal, and other specialty cleaning services

• Assist field personnel with troubleshooting process, equipment, and flow path issues

• Support field adjustments while maintaining compliance with approved protocols and customer requirements

• Verify proper installation and configuration of temporary piping, hoses, pumps, filtration systems, and instrumentation

• Participate in project startup, commissioning, and closeout activities

 

Documentation & Quality Control

 

• Prepare and maintain Good Documentation Practice (GDP) compliant project documentation

• Develop and maintain project files including:

• Cleaning protocols

• Field execution packages

• Equipment logs

• Calibration records

• Inspection reports

• Deviation reports

• Change controls

• Final project reports

• Ensure project documentation is accurate, complete, and ready for customer turnover

• Support document control and quality assurance throughout the project lifecycle

Equipment & Technical Support

 

• Verify process equipment, hoses, fittings, valves, pumps, filtration systems, and instrumentation are suitable for project requirements

• Ensure all measuring and monitoring equipment utilizes current NIST traceable calibrations

• Support equipment readiness, maintenance coordination, and calibration control

• Assist with mobilization, staging, transportation, and demobilization of project equipment

• Coordinate equipment requirements with Operations and Field Service personnel

Project Coordination

 

• Collaborate with customers, Project Managers, Operations, Superintendents, Team Leaders, Safety personnel, and subcontractors throughout project execution

• Track project scope, schedule, material requirements, labor utilization, and resource needs

• Support procurement of project materials and specialty equipment

• Participate in customer meetings, technical reviews, and project planning sessions

• Communicate project status, technical issues, and engineering recommendations to leadership

Continuous Improvement

 

• Support development and improvement of engineering standards, templates, and best practices

• Assist with continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, quality, documentation, and operational efficiency

• Participate in lessons learned reviews following project completion

• Help standardize project documentation and engineering processes across the organization

 

Safety & Compliance

 

• Promote a safety first culture throughout all engineering and field activities

• Ensure engineering documentation complies with customer requirements, OSHA regulations, and company safety standards

• Support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space planning, and chemical handling procedures

• Ensure projects comply with applicable GMP, FDA, and customer quality requirements where applicable

 

Qualifications

Required

 

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred

• 0 to 5+ years of experience in project engineering, process engineering, industrial services, commissioning, validation, or related industries

• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, engineering drawings, and technical specifications

• Strong understanding of piping systems, valves, pumps, instrumentation, hoses, and sanitary process systems

• Knowledge of Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and controlled document management

• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, PDF markup software, and document management systems

• Ability to travel to customer sites and support field execution as required

 

Preferred

• Experience supporting pharmaceutical, biotechnology, semiconductor, food & beverage, or high purity manufacturing environments

• Knowledge of cleaning validation, commissioning, qualification, contamination control, or sanitary process systems

• Familiarity with passivation, derouging, oxygen cleaning, chemical cleaning, or high purity utilities

• Experience using CAD software or engineering drawing review applications

• Understanding of NIST traceable calibration practices and metrology principles

• Knowledge of OSHA regulations, chemical handling, confined space, and Lockout/Tagout procedures
