Assistant Principal - Middle School

Starting Date: Jul 1, 2026 Job Description JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the Principal, the Assistant Principal serves as a vital instructional leader and administrator. This role is dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment while overseeing daily school operations and curriculum implementation. Key responsibilities include managing student discipline, evaluating staff performance, developing master schedules, and building positive relationships with families and the community to ensure overall school success. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks: Serve as principal of the school in absence of the principal. Assist the principal in developing and maintaining a program for the evaluation and improvement of instruction to ensure maximum educational benefits for improving students’ academic progress, including all special populations. Assist the principal in developing a functioning education philosophy consistent with the values of the community, teachers, school administration, and school board. Assist the principal in the development of a multi‑year school support plan following the guidelines from VDOE based on the school’s accreditation designation. Assist the principal in developing, through consensus with the staff, expectations of appropriate treatment of students and monitor to ensure those expectations are met. Communicate openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff, and division administration as a positive representative of the Culpeper County Public School system. Assist in the implementation of division curriculum and program of services in cooperation with teachers and central office staff. Assist in the development of an atmosphere of respect, interest, and enthusiasm within the school. Investigate bus discipline referrals by reviewing video evidence and interviewing students to ensure compliance with county protocols. Dress in a manner that commands the respect of parents, teachers, and pupils. Assist in the supervision and providing for the general welfare of students during the school day, school trips, and school activities. Assist the principal in maintaining effective programs to strengthen and monitor pupil discipline, health, attendance, and academic progress. Assist in the monitoring of the district procedures for reporting to parents, maintaining essential records, and implementing follow‑up procedures as needed. Assist the principal as needed to notify parents and/or obtain medical care in the event of serious student injury or illness. Assist the principal, as requested, in the selection, assignment, and supervision of certificated and classified personnel. Assist the principal, as requested, in maintaining effective evaluation procedures according to district policy. As requested by the principal, assist in the administration of district policies in the operation of the school. Collaborate with the administrative team to lead and sustain a comprehensive teacher mentorship program, emphasizing active participation in onboarding week and providing consistent, year‑round support to ensure the success and retention of new educators. Assist the principal as requested in maintaining school records and filing necessary reports. Oversee the inventory and distribution of textbooks, collect fees for lost textbooks, and complete the annual textbook inventory in collaboration with Central Office. Comply with legal and regulatory requirements of various governmental agencies. Assist the principal in maintaining safe, clean, attractive, and well‑kept buildings and grounds. Attend meetings of the board as required. Work cooperatively with the district administrative team, building leadership team, site council (if established), PTA/PTO, and other school/community groups; and Other duties as assigned by the principal. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and/or Supervision from an accredited institution of higher learning, or school leadership licensing program. Three (3) years’ successful experience as a teacher. Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Possess leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working successfully with teachers, parents, students, and community, as attested by a division superintendent, the chief administrative officer of a school, or an official of an institution of higher learning in a position to evaluate such characteristics. Possess good physical and mental health and personal qualities which build the confidence of pupils, parents, teachers, and other school administrators. Other such qualifications that the school board might accept in lieu of any of the above. Be recommended by the division superintendent and appointed by the school board. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is typically performed through frequent walking, stooping, standing, lifting up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required. Vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity are required for daily tasks. WORK ENVIRONMENT The employee works in an indoor environment with regular contact with staff members, school administrators, and applicants. Timely and regular attendance is expected. Employees must adhere to the workplace schedule to maintain adequate staffing and meet productivity standards. EVALUATION Performance is evaluated by the supervisor based on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities. #J-18808-Ljbffr
