PARALEGAL II
State of Maryland
Introduction The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. The OAG is seeking a highly organized and motivated Paralegal II to support the Principal Counsel serving the Maryland Military Department (MMD) and the Department of Veterans and Military Families (DVMF). This position offers an opportunity to work closely with agency leadership and a broad range of legal and operational stakeholders while supporting matters involving Maryland's military, veterans, and their families. LOCATION OF POSITION The Office of the Attorney General
Maryland Military Department / Department of Veterans and Military Families
Fifth Regiment Armory
29th Division Street
Baltimore, MD 21201 Main Purpose of Job
The MMD/DVMF client unit is a small, dedicated legal operation in which the Principal Counsel is the sole OAG attorney assigned to these two State agencies. The Paralegal II will work directly with the Principal Counsel and will provide the legal and administrative support necessary to maintain an effective two-agency practice. The position will also work closely, as appropriate, with the Staff Judge Advocate's Office and JAG Corps officers on matters involving the federal military side of the agencies' operations.
POSITION DUTIES The Paralegal II will perform a wide range of legal support functions under the general supervision of the Principal Counsel, including conducting legal and factual research; preparing and organizing pleadings, correspondence, discovery, exhibits, hearing materials, and other legal documents; assisting with administrative proceedings and litigation; maintaining legal files and electronic document systems; tracking deadlines and assignments; and assisting with case and matter management.
In addition to traditional paralegal responsibilities, the position will provide administrative coordination directly connected to the Principal Counsel's legal practice. This includes coordinating meetings with agency leadership and other stakeholders, maintaining and organizing the attorney's calendar in connection with hearings, deadlines, meetings, and legal matters, preparing meeting materials, coordinating scheduling across multiple offices, and helping track follow-up items.
This position is well suited for a candidate who enjoys varied work, is comfortable managing competing priorities, and takes pride in producing accurate, organized, and professional work. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop experience across litigation, administrative law, government operations, employment, procurement, contracts, and other legal matters while working closely with an attorney and agency leadership. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.
Notes: 1. Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.
2. Thirty credit hours from an accredited law school may be substituted for the required experience.
3. Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in paralegal specialist classifications or paralegal specialist specialty codes in the legal and kindred field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preference will be given to candidates who have:
• Experience conducting legal and factual research using tools such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, or comparable resources.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare, organize, and manage legal documents, including pleadings, discovery materials, and exhibits, in a litigation or administrative law setting.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, with proven experience tracking deadlines, coordinating schedules, and managing competing priorities in a fast-paced legal environment.
• Prior experience supporting attorneys in government, administrative, employment, procurement, or contract-related matters.
• Proficiency with electronic document management systems and case-management software, with the ability to maintain accurate, orderly, and accessible legal files. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

SELECTION PROCESS Applicants who meet the minimum and selective qualifications will be included in further evaluation. The evaluation may be a rating of your application based on your education, training and experience as they relate to the requirements of the position.
