Orthopedics Physician Assistant

NorthBay Health is seeking an experienced Orthopedic Surgery Physician Assistant to join our growing orthopedic team in Fairfield, CA. This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly skilled PA who is passionate about surgical care and enjoys a dynamic role split between the clinic, hospital, and operating room.

As a member of a multidisciplinary orthopedic care team, you will provide comprehensive patient care across the continuum from initial evaluation and treatment planning to post-operative management and surgical first assist responsibilities. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with orthopedic surgeons while caring for patients in both ambulatory and surgical settings.

Position Overview
The Orthopedic Surgery Physician Assistant functions as an integral member of the orthopedic care team, providing advanced clinical care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Working under the supervision of a licensed physician and within the scope of practice established by the State of California, the PA delivers patient care in the clinic, hospital, ambulatory surgery center, and operating room. The role includes comprehensive orthopedic assessment and treatment, inpatient rounding, care coordination, patient education, and serving as a surgical first assistant.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments, physical examinations, and medical history reviews.
• Develop diagnoses and treatment plans appropriate to patient needs.
• Order and interpret diagnostic testing, laboratory studies, and ancillary services.
• Review and communicate test results with patients and coordinate appropriate follow-up care.
• Request specialty consultations in collaboration with supervising physicians.
• Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatments, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations.
• Perform orthopedic procedures and treatments within scope of practice.
• Apply casts, splints, braces, and other orthopedic devices as appropriate.
• Identify high-risk conditions and escalate care to the appropriate physician when necessary.

Surgical Responsibilities

• Serve as a surgical first assistant for orthopedic procedures.
• Support surgeons in hospital and ambulatory surgery center settings.
• Ensure compliance with all surgical safety and quality protocols.
• Assist with pre-operative and post-operative patient management.
• Educate patients regarding surgical preparation, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Care Coordination & Collaboration

• Conduct inpatient rounds in support of assigned surgical services.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care.
• Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as appropriate.
• Participate in patient case reviews and multidisciplinary care conferences.
• Work collaboratively to ensure efficient patient flow and exceptional patient experiences.

Quality & Professional Practice

• Document patient care according to established protocols and regulatory standards.
• Complete coding and billing documentation for patient encounters.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, outcomes tracking, and data collection efforts.
• Contribute to the development of orthopedic clinical standards and best practices.
• Serve as a clinical resource for staff and team members.
• Participate in clinic Practice Operations Council activities.
• Participate in call rotation as assigned.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program approved by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
• Evidence of training and competency as a Surgical First Assistant required.

Licensure & Certifications

• Current California Physician Assistant license.
• Current NCCPA certification.
• Current AHA Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.
• Current California Furnishing Number.
• Current DEA registration with Schedule II authority, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.

Experience

• Minimum of three years of Physician Assistant experience in Orthopedics, Surgery, or a related specialty.
• Minimum of two years of surgical first assist experience required.
• Experience in both clinic and surgical settings strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong orthopedic assessment, diagnostic, and treatment skills.
• Demonstrated expertise as a surgical first assistant.
• Ability to provide age-appropriate care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and patient education abilities.
• Experience with electronic health records and healthcare technology.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Outlook.

Compensation
Hourly Rate: $88.42 - $107.45
Compensation is based on directly related experience and NorthBay Health's compensation structure. Maximum rates are associated with candidates who possess 20 or more years of directly related Physician Assistant experience.
