About the Office The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota’s Criminal Division seeks Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) and will fill other vacant AUSA positions as well. Visit for more information. Duties AUSA lead cases from investigation, through charging, pretrial litigation, trial, sentencing, and appeal. The Criminal Division is divided into four sections: Violent & Major Crimes, Fraud & Public Corruption, Narcotics & Indian Country and National Security & Cybercrime. Assignments may span multiple sections. Responsibilities grow in complexity as training and experience advance. Security Requirements Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprinting, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable background investigation. Residency Requirements Assistant United States Attorneys must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Selective Service Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify registration with the Selective Service System or exemption. Requirements & Qualifications United States citizenship. J.D. degree and active membership in any U.S. bar. At least one year post‑J.D. legal or relevant experience. Successful background and security clearance as described. Registered for Selective Service, if applicable. Residence within district or within 25 miles. 14‑month temporary appointment pending clearance. Preferred Qualifications Strong writing and analytical abilities, courtroom presence, and an excellent academic record. Experience in complex financial crimes, corruption, major narcotics cases, or national security/cybercrime is desirable. Recent graduates with relevant experience are also considered. Education Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree. Salary Information Base pay ranges from $80,609 to $195,100, inclusive of 27.62% locality pay. Benefits Paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Relocation Expenses Not authorized. Travel Occasional travel, generally no more than 1 to 5 nights per month. Type of Position All initial attorney appointments are 14‑month temporary pending clearance.
