Campus Public Safety Officer FLSA Status: Nonexempt Months Per Year: 12 Hours Per Week: 40 Employment Status: Full-Time Work Model: On-site Position Description The Campus Public Safety Officer is a vital member of the campus Public Safety team and serves as the first responder under the direction of the Public Safety Supervisor or its designee. This dynamic role requires vigilance, quick decision‑making, and engagement with the campus community. As a uniformed, non‑commissioned officer, the officer actively patrols campus grounds, provides essential medical and security aid, coordinates emergency services, documents critical incidents, and ensures the safety and well‑being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The role focuses heavily on community service, mental health support, and assistance to the broader campus community. The officer maintains a shift schedule that includes coverage during campus closures and holidays. Officers work collaboratively in teams of 5–6 personnel, including a supervisor and dispatcher, in a 24/7 staffing model. Teams rotate between day and night shifts every six months to ensure balanced coverage. Campus Safety & Security Operations (60%) Conduct proactive patrols to monitor security, prevent incidents, and ensure campus safety. Respond to non‑emergency requests, provide campus escorts, and assist with general security concerns. Operate the communications center, monitoring safety systems, CCTV, dispatching responders, and maintaining records. Uphold Seattle University policies while maintaining a customer‑service‑focused approach. Emergency Response & Incident Management (20%) Serve as the first responder to emergencies, including medical incidents, accidents, and security threats. Provide immediate medical assistance and coordinate emergency services (EMS, fire, law enforcement). Document and maintain accurate records of incidents, ensuring compliance with legal and institutional policies. Communications Center Operations (10%) Operate the campus Public Safety communications center. Monitor security and fire life‑safety systems and dispatch responders as needed. Answer and triage campus emergency line calls, remaining calm and coordinating appropriate response. Maintain a computer‑aided dispatch program to track calls, incidents, and officer activity. Utilize campus video surveillance system to deter and respond to incidents. Community Engagement & Collaboration (10%) Offer support and guidance to students and staff, focusing on mental health and well‑being. Collaborate with other Seattle University departments to enhance campus safety and services. Perform other duties as assigned. Other Job Activity Move. Communicate. Observe and recognize. Run. Qualifications High school diploma and one or more years of previous security experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Ability to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, walking, and running significant distances; restrain and take into custody another person; receive university‑sponsored self‑defense training; lift or otherwise move up to the weight of a person; climb stairs; occasionally work at heights above 30 feet; perform duties in confined spaces and varying outdoor weather conditions. Ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written form, including use of two‑way radio, telephone, and in face‑to‑face contacts; give or take direction in stressful or emergency situations. Valid Washington State driver’s license required. Certification in CPR and First Aid required within three months of hire. Must be at least 21 years of age in order to legally enter a licensed or unlicensed drinking establishment to enforce rules and regulations.
