Public Safety Telecommunicator Vacancy Number: 010211 Employment Type: Permanent – Full‑time Salary Range: $33,540 – $43,553 (NC04) Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; hours may vary based on duty requirements. Location: Police & Public Safety, University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Primary Purpose of the Position Performs technical communications work in support of public safety operations: receives emergent and non‑emergent calls, monitors alarms, obtains and relays information, prioritizes calls/alarms, coordinates response procedures, dispatches appropriate public safety personnel, and maintains public safety communications logs and databases. Essential Job Duties Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls for assistance and information. Provide dispatch and communication support services for police, fire, emergency, and related services. Operate a multi‑line telephone console system, an alerting system, and LiveSafe. Translate information into appropriate codes and determine the priority level of the call. Enter and modify data in a computer‑aided dispatch system for radio dispatch purposes. Perform crisis intervention services and ask vital questions to ensure callers receive proper emergency response. Transfer fire and medical needs to the appropriate dispatch centers. Monitor and operate a radio console and computer equipment. Respond to a variety of emergency and non‑emergency services and complaints. Interpret, analyze and anticipate caller situations to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch services, or refer callers to other agencies. Dispatch and coordinate responses of public safety agencies. Identify the appropriate number and type of equipment or apparatus to dispatch. Enter and modify information into local, state, and national computer databases. Monitor and respond to a variety of technical systems and alarms. Other Work Responsibilities Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or designee. Minimum Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Experience sufficient to demonstrate ability to work under pressure. Journey level requires an additional year of experience. Preferred Experience, Skills, and Training Previous experience as a public safety dispatcher. Experience in general telecommunications duties, including emergency call response and dispatch of police, medics, and fire. Ability to perform effectively under pressure with strong attention to detail. Proficiency with telecommunication equipment and other telecommunications duties. Proficiency with Microsoft and Google Suite and ability to learn additional computer programs. Required Licenses or Certifications Certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Basic Telecommunicator Certification or ability to achieve certification within one year of employment, as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
