Part time Research and Development Engineer

Position Overview The Materials Science and Applications (MSA) Division in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) seeks a Mechanical Research & Development Engineer to join a team focusing on next‑generation materials and advanced manufacturing for critical defense applications. Responsibilities Support the development of R&D programs to support critical DoD assets. Provide subject‑matter expertise in the manufacturing and design of microelectronics. Develop application‑specific test methods to evaluate performance of DoD microelectronic devices. Define critical performance metrics for novel microelectronics in DoD applications. Required Qualifications Background knowledge of manufacturing processes needed to produce and transition critical DoD components. Detailed knowledge of DoD applications that can benefit from advanced materials and processing technologies. Experience with the design, development, and manufacturing of additively manufactured components. Ability to maintain organized and detailed notes. Good communication skills. Willingness to work in a fast‑paced team environment. Preferred Qualifications Experience in managing and executing R&D programs. Advanced knowledge of DoD applications that would benefit from new microelectronic technologies. Ability to develop and execute R&D programs. Location Your working location will be on‑site in State College, PA, primarily at the 230 Building at Innovation Park. Some work may be performed at the Millennium Science Complex (MSC) and other ARL buildings on campus. Background & Clearance Successful completion of background checks is required, along with the ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required.
