Job Overview Under the direction of the Physician, this role performs a variety of clinical and clerical services to support physician practice in an outpatient setting. Duties & Responsibilities Certified Medical Assistant duties per healthcare facility protocols and assigned tasks. Maintain medical records in Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, review & prepare to ensure completeness prior to patient exam, obtain missing documentation; document medical visits, observations, and related activities. Direct Patient Care Tasks Assist nursing/medical staff with preliminary assessment, education, and documentation of patient condition; obtain vital signs and health information; conduct patient screenings during intake. Administer basic tests such as EKG, spirometry, pulse oximetry, clinical laboratory improvement amendments (CLIA) procedures. Inform patients of test preparations and directions to diagnostic/treatment areas. Obtain specimens by noninvasive techniques and collect blood specimens via capillary and venipuncture. Assist medical/nursing staff with diagnostic/therapeutic procedures appropriate to experience and training. Respond to patient inquiries in person or by telephone and relay information to appropriate clinical staff. Transport or accompany patients as directed. Document patient medications for medication reconciliation by history. Administer approved injections per appropriate protocol. Indirect Patient Care Tasks Under direct supervision, complete requisitions for diagnostic tests/procedures. Assist in collection and processing of patient specimens; perform and document point-of-care specimen testing. Follow up to obtain laboratory/test results and other medical record data; record lab information. Maintain patient care environment in compliance with safety and infection control requirements; order, stock, and monitor supplies; dispose of soiled supplies; sterilize equipment. Perform and document quality control tests on equipment as appropriate. Clean and sterilize equipment and maintain cleaning logs. Obtain pre-authorizations and referrals. Clerical Tasks Maintain patient files and medical records; extract clinical/demographic information as required. Schedule patient appointments. Check patients in/out, requisition charts/studies, register patients and activate accounts per hospital procedures. Record lab data. Assist other staff with office reception and business support. Collect cash payments and maintain accurate cash records. Perform assigned duties and participate in initiatives to promote effective process design, development, and implementation of EHR and other technologies; participate in improvement projects and assigned committees. Minimum Qualifications Required High school graduation or equivalent. Current/valid certification as a Certified Medical Assistant by an approved certifying board (AAMA, AMT, NCCTI, or NHA). Current/valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR certification. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Basic first aid principles, methods, and techniques. Knowledge of aseptic and sterilization techniques; competency in point‑of‑care testing. Competency in venipuncture techniques. Competency in specialized tests. Knowledge of inventory procedures. Knowledge of medical records policies, procedures and documentation requirements. Telephone communication skills. Communication with persons from varying cultural and economic backgrounds. Recognition of patient needs, characteristics, and behavior across age groups and special needs. Knowledge of billing and collection procedures. Accuracy and skill in writing medical requisitions. Accuracy and skill in taking and recording vital statistics. Decision‑making based on urgency and hospital/clinic policies. Follow oral and written instructions. Willingness to deal effectively with patients, hospital staff, and others. Organizational skills. Knowledge of University, Medical Center, Departmental, and work unit policies. Knowledge of registration and scheduling requirements; ability to enter data into patient information systems.
