Job Description - Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) (2603397) Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology. Education as detailed below, may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience. Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience. Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). In addition, must participate in the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (drug and alcohol testing) as required; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Candidates must be able to perform the physical tasks of the position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of operation and use of gasoline, diesel and liquid propane gas fuel system. Towing endorsement preferred. Class B NYS Driver’s License (CDL). Brief Descriptions of Duties: As a Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), you would diagnose and correct the causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation. You would overhaul, adjust and repair: gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions and differentials; ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking and complex hydraulic systems; steering, wheel and suspension mechanisms; and body, cab and frame components. You would also conduct NYS inspections. You may be assigned to overhaul and rebuild generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air and hydraulic), spreaders, small engines, mowers and a variety of other equipment, including but not limited to track vehicles, loaders (front-end and belt), and etc. You may diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems, and air conditioning. Perform routine maintenance and mechanic repairs on disabled vehicles, construction and other equipment in the field. Job Duties Perform skilled mechanical work in automotive, bus and grounds maintenance repair shops in the maintenance, repair and overhaul or gasoline and diesel powered self-propelled and operator-propelled motor-driven equipment, and may also perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, construction and other equipment used in the field. Makes periodic inspections on State Vehicle Inspection Law (Incumbents must be licensed to perform this inspection.) Visually examine the equipment and if needed may operate equipment to determine the nature and extent of the damage and to get a description of symptoms associated with the malfunction. Use appropriate test equipment, observation and experience, diagnose the cause of the fault mechanical or electrical performance. Repair malfunctions on all types of automotive and industrial equipment. Use, for repair purposes, all types of testing equipment, including engine analyzers, electrical system testers, and various hand and power tools used to repair of trucks, buses, cars, construction and ground equipment used for maintenance. Repair and change all sizes of automobile and equipment tires. Repair, service, both manual and automatic transmissions, including clutch assemblies, differentials, transfer cases, torque converters and gear trains. Make repairs using electric and gas welding equipment to weld, cut and braze a variety of materials. Repair and install new vehicle/equipment and gasoline/diesel engines. Perform preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles and equipment, as required by manufacturer or policy, to ensure a safe and trouble-free day to day operations. May supervise and instruct others in maintenance and repair of trucks, buses, cars, construction and grounds maintenance equipment. Perform repairs needed on small trucks and construction equipment such as street sweepers, small backhoes, and front end loaders. Assist with emergency snow removal operations. May drive and operate tow truck and other types of motor vehicles. Complete necessary paper work in order to document all repairs and preventative maintenance tasks performed. Test-drive University owned vehicles. Knowledge of operation and use of gasoline, diesel and liquid propane gas fuel systems. Understand and carry out written and verbal instructions. Read and interpret technical maintenance manuals, circuit, diagrams, and blueprints. Lift medium to heavy objects. Adhere to safety standards and practices established by the University safety procedures. Some diagnostic tools and records are on computer applications and therefore staff must be able to use this medium. Must maintain a good working relationship with peers, co-workers, and supervisors in order. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 12 Hiring Rate $52,694. This position includes location pay of $4,150 per year. The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation. For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
