Current USCP employees not eligible. Requires a USCP full field background investigation. Summary The United States Capitol Police safeguards the Congress, its members, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. The USCP protects and secures Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure, and open environment. Responsibilities Enforce Federal and District of Columbia laws and regulations, and enforce USCP rules and regulations related to law enforcement. Physically protect the U.S. Capitol complex, Members of Congress, visitors, and staff from threats of crime and disruption; preserve law and order; serve as a deterrent to crime and other violations. Take charge of accidents and crime scenes, restrict access, observe, stop, and question suspicious persons. Prepare reports and testify in court. Perform protective services, safeguard federally-owned buildings and property, and protect government equipment and property. Upon successful completion of training and a probationary period, and meeting time-in-grade and experience requirements, future competitive promotions are available to advance to other duties, higher rank, or specialized assignments such as Special Operations Division, Canine Section, Containment Emergency Response Division, Dignitary Protection Division, Intelligence Analysis Division, Intelligence Operations Division, Criminal Investigations Section, Threat Assessment Section, and Hazardous Incident Response Division. Requirements Current United States citizen. Full‑time law enforcement officer, possessing 52 weeks of law enforcement experience at the time of appointment and 9 months of experience after training at the time of application. Completed FLETC UPTP, FLETA accredited military or other equivalent police training program, or CBP training program (USBPI or CBPOPT); certificate must be attached to application. Valid REAL ID U.S. driver’s license with no revocation or suspension in the past year. Prudent driving record within the last year. Male applicants: registered for Selective Service; female applicants exempt. Successful completion of a full field background investigation, psychological evaluation, medical examination, polygraph examination, and drug test. Ability to meet age requirements: minimum 21 years old at appointment, not older than 39 (or 40 if appointed at 39) with mandatory retirement at 59, with special provisions for lateral transfer allowing service to reach 20 years of combined federal law enforcement service by age 59. For applicants over 39, SF‑50 showing retirement coverage by special law enforcement retirement provisions required. Proficiency in firearm use and willingness to carry a firearm. Proficiency driving at high speeds, obstacle courses, and in inclement weather; ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Retention of a good standing in federal law enforcement, no felony convictions, no domestic violence convictions, no DUI/DWI convictions, and no use of illegal drugs in violation of suitability standards. Education High school diploma or GED certificate required. Completion of any of the following: FLETC Uniform Police Training Program, FLETA accredited military or other equivalent police training program, or Customs and Border Patrol training programs. Additional Information The USCP offers a competitive starting salary of $83,362. Upon validation of current annual base salary, selectees whose base salary meets or exceeds this starting salary will receive a base salary offer that equals or exceeds their current annual base salary. A recruitment bonus will be provided: $5,000 following appointment and another $5,000 following completion of 18 months of service, contingent upon signing a two‑year service agreement. The comprehensive benefits package includes health insurance, dental insurance, vision care, life and long‑term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, flexible spending accounts, and access to an employee assistance program. Retirement benefits through the Federal Employees Retirement System. Student Loan Repayment Program Incentive up to $10,000 annually with a maximum of $80,000 per employee subject to budget availability. Transfer of sick leave from other federal agencies may apply. Transit subsidy benefits may be provided as a tax‑free benefit. Additional on‑site fitness centers with personal trainer consultants are available.
