Senior Manager, Senior Counsel - Consumer & Small Business Legal

An amazing opportunity exists for an experienced attorney to join Capital One’s Consumer & Small Business Legal team. In this critical role, you will help our Retail Bank Marketing and Product Strategy (MAPS) organization refine, develop and bring to life new and existing banking products for our millions of banking customers.  In this role, you will have a seat at the table alongside senior business leaders as we develop innovative savings products for our expanding customer base and will advise the organization on mission critical imperatives such as product and marketing strategy. 

In this role, you will be a key legal and strategic advisor to MAPS business partners in the Savings and Marketing areas as they develop well-managed solutions to complex business problems. And you’ll do it all in a collaborative, supportive environment that values your insight, promotes continuous learning, and rewards strategic and creative thinking.

As business counsel, you will: 

• Provide day-to-day business counsel advice and support to the Savings and Marketing teams within the retail bank 

• Partner closely with other Compliance and Risk advisors to drive comprehensive and consistent support

• Partner internally with other business counsel and legal subject matter experts to drive consistency and best practices across Capital One’s lines of business

• Collaborate with our in-house Retail Bank Litigation team to manage product related litigation matters

• Manage and coordinate outside counsel in an effective and efficient manner

• Review and enhance associate-facing policies and procedures

• Review and enhance customer-facing communications

• Assist in monitoring and supervision of key third-party relationships

Basic Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

• Active member in good standing of at least one state bar

• At least 4 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency  

Preferred Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency involving regulatory experience, with specific experience in advising bank depository and lending business teams

• Specific familiarity with UDAAP, Reg E, Reg CC, NACHA, UCC Articles 3 and 4, BSA/AML/KYC, Privacy, etc.

• Ability to identify and assess legal risks presented by a complex business model, and to communicate those risks to business partners

• Ability to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needs

• Ability to build collegial and effective relationships with attorneys, business managers, creative teams, analysts, project managers, and corporate compliance and risk professionals, and work cooperatively to resolve issues smoothly and quickly

• Ability to prioritize a significant volume of work and to manage multiple, simultaneous deadlines

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others

This role is hybrid, meaning associates spend 3 days per week in-person at one of our offices listed on this job posting.

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $200,700 - $229,100 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel

Richmond, VA: $182,500 - $208,300 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel

Riverwoods, IL: $182,500 - $208,300 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
